Air Force in store for big weekend in Houston
11/16/2022 1:47:00 PM | Women's Swimming and Diving
The Air Force women's swimming and diving team has made a splash early on in the 2022-23 campaign, as the program will aim to carry its established momentum into Houston where the Falcons are slated to participate in the Phill Hansel Invitational. The three-day meet begins each morning at 9:00 am MT with preliminary sessions. Following a break, the teams will head back into the pool for finals starting at 5:00 pm MT, Thursday and Friday. Finals will begin at 3:00 pm MT on Saturday.
Air Force will face five other teams over the weekend including Houston, New Mexico, North Texas, Rice and Tulane.
About Phill Hansel
This weekend's meet is named in honor of former University of Houston Swimming & Diving Head Coach Phill Hansel. Hansel, considered the Father of Cougar Swimming & Diving, led the Cougars from 1975 to 1996, racking up 70 dual-meet victories. He helped UH finish in the Top-20 ten times at the AIAW and NCAA Championships.
Hansel, a 1949 graduate of Purdue, was named the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year three times during his tenure, and mentored 31 swimmers to All-America honors, including Diane Johannigman, the first NCAA swimming national champion in UH history.
Hansel also had an impressive resume at the international level, serving as the manager of the 1992 U.S. Olympics teams and working with the Singapore teams at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
In his honor, the University of Houston will host the Phill Hansel Invitational every fall.

Coach Murphy After Grand Canyon
"What a great day for our team. We started with a win in the 400 Medley and a 1-2-3 sweep of the 1000 Free. We never let up. We did the little things right and won the close races. It was a total team effort. Our depth was apparent and the team stepped up in every race. I'm so proud of our team and their tenacity this weekend."
