Air Force Downed By #16 Santa Clara In Overtime At WWPA Championships

Air Force men's water polo (23-11) fell to #16 Santa Clara (12-12), 16-15, in overtime in the opening round of action Friday at the 2022 Western Water Polo Association Championships at the Burns Aquatic Center on the campus of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Falcons, playing as the five-seed dug themselves a big hole early, trailing 4-1 after one quarter of play and 8-5 at halftime. Air Force rebounded in the third quarter, outs-scoring the fourth-seeded Broncos 4-1 to tied it up at 9-9. Air Force took a brief lead in the fourth before Santa Clara rallied to tie it up 14-14 to send the game to overtime.
Santa Clara got a goal in the first overtime to take the lead and extended the lead to two goals with a score in the second overtime. Grant Snyder scored a goal with one minute left in the second overtime to pull the Falcons within one score. Air Force was unable to get another score.
Snyder led Air Force with five goals and an assist. Kaito Ham added four goals and an assist. Cole Kopperud scored two goals. Air Force also got goals from Ian Christie, Jacob Yi, Sam De La Cruz and Bruce Kim. The Falcons won all six sprints, with Snyder and Christie winning three each.
A.J. Kuypers had six saves in goal for the Falcons.
Air Force caps its season tomorrow against sixth-seed Cal Baptist. The game starts at 1:30 pm PT.
