U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force women's basketball team is set to face its second-consecutive Power Five opponent in a week as they open the first round of the 2022 Gulf Coast Showcase against No. 22 Michigan. Winner of Friday's contest will advance to the semifinal round to face the winner of Georgia Tech/South Florida.
The Field:
The eight-team field consists of three programs currently ranked in the AP Top-25 (No. 21 Baylor, No. 22 Michigan, No. 23 Villanova), and one receiving votes (South Florida). Competing institutions are a combined 25-11 to start the season, with four (Baylor, Belmont, Villanova, South Florida) having played in their respective conference tournaments in 2022.
About the Gulf Coast Showcase:
Following Thanksgiving Day, the women's tournament tips on Friday, Nov. 25 headlined by six NCAA Tournament participants including 2016 Gulf Coast Showcase champion Baylor and South Florida making the short drive from Tampa. The women's tournament is still considered by many as the premier women's in-season event in all of college basketball. Past champions include UConn (2014 Gulf Coast Showcase champion), Stanford (2015), Baylor (2016), Notre Dame (2017), Texas (2018), Gonzaga (2019) and Iowa State (2021).
The first-round pairings for this year's women's tournament are as follows:
11 a.m. ET – Baylor vs. Saint Louis
1:30 p.m. ET – Belmont vs. Villanova
5 p.m. ET – Michigan vs. Air Force
7:30 p.m. ET – Georgia Tech vs. USF
Scouting Air Force:
The 3-1 Falcons enter Friday's match posting top-ten figures nationally in steals per-game (6th, 15.8) and free-throw percentage (4th, 85.5%); Air Force's 63 steals in four games has produced a turnover margin of 9.75, good for 17th in the nation; The Falcons also fall into the 22nd national-percentile or higher in turnovers forced per-game (23.25), assist/turnover ratio (1.20), and assists per-game (16.2).
Tip of the Spear
Senior Kamri Heath has led Air Force in scoring through the Falcons' first four games, averaging 19.3 points per-game. Heath leads the Mountain West and is 35th nationally in field goals made (35), along with sporting the nation's 25th-best field goal percentage (.636).
Sophomore Jo Huntimer, sporting a team-high 14 steals to open the season and averaging 3.5 per-game, ranks 38th and 23rd in both respective categories. On the ball, the Honolulu native has produced 26 assists and is 13th in the nation in assists per-game (6.5).
C4C Pack
Air Force women's basketball rosters 13 players in 2022-23, including the addition of six C4C (Cadet, Fourth-Class - freshman) newcomers - Mackenzie Le, Milahnie Perry, Faith Shelton, Griffin Greenwood, Parker Brown, Emily Adams.
Scouting Michigan:
The No. 23 Wolverines are 4-0 to open the season, with wins over Delaware State (83-30), St. Francis (91-36), Western Michigan (99-67) and Fairfield (69-53). Michigan closed its 2021-22 season with a 25-7 record and an NCAA tournament run which ended in the Elite 8 at the hands of four-seed Louisville.
Michigan is led by a tandem consisting of guard Laila Phelia and forward Emily Kiser, who currently both average over 20 points per-game. Pheila, Michigan's lead scorer from three-point range, is 11-18 from beyond the arc (.611).
Coach G Gaining Ground
Gobrecht is currently serving her 43rd season as a head coach - the second-longest tenure in Division I women's hoops behind Stanford's Tara VanDerveer (44). Gobrecht's coaching resume boasts 601 career wins, a figure good for 16th among active division I women's basketball head coaches.
Into her eighth season at the head of the Falcons' program, coach Gobrecht currently has 58 career Air Force wins to her name, making her the all-time winningest coach at three separate institutions- Air Force, Yale and Washington.
Gobrecht was named 2021-22 Mountain West Coach of the Year following Air Force's successful 19-14 season – A year punctuated by Gobrecht's fourth career WNIT appearance as a head coach, and Air Force's first postseason appearance and subsequent win in program history – a 64-60 victory over WCC opponent San Francisco on March 17.

The Falcons took Colorado within one possession in the final minute on Nov. 19 at the CU Events Center, but ultimately fell to the Buffaloes 71-63.
Four Falcons closed out the night in double-digit scoring; Heath scored 16 points; Sophomore Madison Smith scored 14 points, including three-consecutive three-pointers in less than two minutes of play; Huntimer posted 12 points off 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc, including a career-high six steals; Junior Dasha Macmillan scored 12 on the night. Including six rebounds and three assists.
