U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force earned its first sweep of the season with a 3-1 victory over Alaska-Anchorage in a non-conference college hockey game Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena. With the come-from-behind win, the Falcons extended their winning streak to three games and improved to 5-4-1 overall.
Alaska-Anchorage (2-6-0) opened the scoring at 7:04 of the first period when Derek Hamelin took a shot from the left point that hit hard off the back boards. The puck caromed right to Matt Allen on the back door who scored his third of the season.
Air Force tied the game midway through the second period. Bennet Norlin pushed a puck up the wall in the neutral zone and started a 2-on-1. Jacob Marti set up freshman Holt Oliphant who netted his first career goal in his first career game at 6:53.
The Falcons broke the tie at 12:21 of the third period. Brett Oberle collected his first career assist as he started the breakout in his own end. Will Gavin chipped a puck in and Clayton Cosentino collected it with speed down the left wing. Cosentino went to the backhand for his second goal of the series and second of the season. In the final three minutes, UAA pulled the goalie for the extra attacker. Air Force blocked a pair of shots in the extra attacker situation and sent the puck into the neutral zone. Parker Brown centered the puck off the wall and freshman Mason McCormick scored an empty-netter with 24 seconds left.
Air Force outshot UAA, 32-14, in the game. Guy Blessing made 13 saves in the game. UAA goalie Nolan Kent made 29 saves. Each team was 0-for-3 on the power play. The Falcons have killed 14 straight opponent power plays.
"I couldn't be happier and not just with the win, but how we won," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Last night, we battled through and found a way to win behind our goaltender. Tonight, we were the better team. I liked how we managed the game and how played tonight from start to finish."
Air Force returns to action with an Atlantic Hockey series against Bentley, Nov. 11-12, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
