The freshman registered the ninth-best score in Air Force history (14.350) to win the event.
BERKELEY, Calif. – Freshman Bryan Woffinden claimed the first event title of his career this afternoon (Feb. 20) to lead the 13th-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team (377.200) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation dual with ninth-ranked California (401.150) at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley.
Woffinden, competing in his first conference dual – and just the second meet of his freshman year – scored a 14.350 to win the event by 0.200 points. That score – the highest by an Academy gymnast this season – allowed the freshman to debut in ninth on the program's all-time standings. Woffinden was one of two Falcons to finish within top half of the overall field, as senior Collin Hickey finished fifth with a 13.950.
The Falcons' younger classes led the way on Sunday, with members of the freshman and sophomore classes claiming team-leading marks in five of the six events. Woffinden's classmate Erich Upton led Air Force on the high bar (fifth, 12.300) and parallel bars (sixth, career-best 13.300), while adding a top-five finish on the floor exercise (fifth, career-best 13.200) and scoring a 77.300 in his all-around debut.
Sophomore Jake Sampier finished one spot ahead of Upton on the floor, as he scored a season-high 13.450 to take fourth in that event. Fellow sophomores Jacob Becchetti and Oliver Zavel placed within the top half of the pommel horse field, as Becchetti led the team with a career-best score of 13.050 (fourth) and Zavel added a career-best, fifth-place tally of 12.850. Senior Noah Everett rounded out the Falcons' list of event leaders, as he scored a season-high 12.600 to finish seventh.
The Falcons are off from team competition for next week's Winter Cup break, but return to action on March 5, when they return to California for a rematch with the Bears during a triangular meet at Stanford.
