Oliver Zavel Leads Falcons in USAG Event Finals

Zavel collected second-place finishes on the parallel bars and high bar during the Event Finals.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Highlighted by a pair of runner-up finishes from sophomore Oliver Zavel, the Air Force men's gymnastics team wrapped up competition at the USAG Collegiate Nationals this afternoon (March 26) in Annapolis. Picking up a pair of USAG All-America awards, Zavel was one of seven Falcons to compete in the event finals against gymnasts from Navy, Springfield, William & Mary, and the GymACT club division.
Zavel, who tallied second-place scores on the parallel bars (career-best 13.925) and high bar (12.850), led Air Force to a multiple USAG All-America honors on both events, as freshman Charlie Miles posted a fourth-place mark of 12.200 on the high bar and senior Noah Everett added a 12.875 to take fifth on the parallel bars.
Air Force also claimed a runner-up finish on the floor exercise, as sophomore Jake Sampier scored a 13.475 to finish second and claim his first USAG All-America certificate.
Sophomore Garrett Braunton, who earned a bid the U.S. Championships after winning the all-around title last night, picked up his second USAG All-America award of the weekend by placing third on the still rings with a score of 13.250. Freshman Bryan Woffinden rounded out the Falcons' list of top-six finishers on Saturday, as he scored a 12.900 to place fourth on the pommel horse.
In addition to the still rings, Braunton also competed in the event finals of the pommel horse, finishing seventh with an 11.700, while freshman Erich Upton – another USAG All-American in the all-around – participated on two events during today's finals, placing eighth on the floor (12.625) and vault (14.025).
Air Force returns to action next Saturday (April 2), as it makes a return trip to Stanford to face the top-ranked Cardinal, third-ranked Oklahoma and ninth-ranked California at the 2022 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
