Air Force Duo Opens Action at Jim Click Shootout

Backed by a winning 898-point time at 400 meters, Wyatt Murphy is in fifth after five events.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Two members of the Air Force track and field team opened competition at the Jim Click Decathlon this afternoon (Apr. 7) in Tucson. Backed by two strong performances on the track, senior Wyatt Murphy leads the pair with a fifth-place standing at the midway point of the 10-event competition.
Murphy used an 898-point performance in the final event of the day to jump from eighth to fifth in the overall standings. Clocking a first-place time of 48.24 in the 400-meter dash – a mark just 0.02 shy of his season best, Murphy finished Thursday's competition with 3870 points – the second-highest Day 1 total of his career. The senior opened the day with a season-best, 912-point time of 10.77 in the 100-meter dash. Before adding 748 points in the long jump (22'0¾"), 572 points in the shot put (37'6") and 740 points in the high jump (6'4").
Sophomore Braeden Holcombe, competing in his first Jim Click Decathlon event, is currently in 12th with 3598 points – a tally just 11 points shy of his best Day 1 total. Holcombe accounted for a career best in the long jump (22'1¾", 755 points) and a season best in the shot put (40'3¼", 623 points), while adding a season-opening 100-meter time of 11.72 (707 points), a high jump clearance of 6'4" (740 points) and a 400-meter time of 50.92 (773 points) to round out his overall scoring on Thursday.
The pair returns to Drachman Stadium at 10:00 a.m. (MST) tomorrow (April 8) for the final five events of the Jim Click Decathlon. In addition, a handful of Falcons will also open competition at the Colorado Invitational in Boulder.
