DETAILS: The Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational is a two-part event with the team competition being played on the Blue Course and the individual event on the Silver Course. The 24-team, 54-hole tournament, will be held at the Eisenhower Golf Club, Fri.-Sun., Sept. 9-11.
The five members of each team will play on the Blue Course on Friday and Saturday. Golfers will play 18 holes with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. (MT). Sunday's tee times will begin at 7:30 am (MT). All individuals will play on the Silver course, with a shotgun start at 9:30 am on Friday and Saturday and 8:30 am on Sunday. The practice round will be held on Thursday, Sept. 8, beginning at 8:00 a.m.
THE FIELD: Along with Air Force, the 24-team field includes Boston College, California Baptist, Cal Poly, Cal-State Northridge, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Idaho, Murray State, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, San Jose State, SIU-Edwardsville, South Dakota, Southern Utah, Utah State, Utah Tech, Utah Valley, UTEP, Weber State, Wofford and Wyoming.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational is in its 53rd season. Formerly known as the Rocky Mountain Invitational and the Pikes Peak Invitational, the event was re-named the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in 2003 to honor the legendary coach who headed up the Air Force program for 25 years and is a member of the Air Force Athletics' Hall of Fame.
EISENHOWER BLUE COURSE: The Blue Course of the Eisenhower Golf Club opened in the 1959 and is named after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony. The 7,541 yard, par 72 course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and was ranked as the third best military course in the nation (PGA.com) and the 24th best college course (Golf Week) in the country. The Silver Course, designed by an excellent Colorado architect, Frank Hummel, is the newer of the two Eisenhower courses. It is shorter than the Blue Course, but makes up for its lack of length with fast, tricky greens, narrow fairways and many hazards. It is built in a beautiful setting, with many spectacular mountain views and a view of the cadet chapel. The course, a par 72 with no out-of-bounds, compliments the Blue Course very well because it requires more accuracy than length off the tee.
LAST SEASON AT THE GMFI: UC Davis won the team competition with a tournament record 831 (-33). Nevada was second (855), Denver was third (856), Weber State was fourth (859) and Wyoming was fifth (861). Air Force was 20th at 925. UCD's Thomas Hutchison won the individual title with a tournament record 201 (-15). Hutchison also holds both the tournament and course record at 62, shot the second day of the tournament. Isaac Layne was the top Falcon at 230.
In the individual event on the Silver Course, Colorado's Jack Hughes won with a score of 209 (-7). Cameron Kahle, a freshman last season, was the top Falcon on the Silver Course, placing 22nd with a 224 (+8). In the final round, he shot a one-under-par 71.
LOOKING AT THE FALCONS: Air Force enters the 2022-23 season with one of its youngest teams in recent history as nine of the 12 team members are freshmen and sophomores. The lone senior, and team captain, Isaac Layne, will play in the No. 1 slot at this week's season-opening tournament. The Falcons have two juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen on the roster. Sophomore Christopher Park will play No. 2, freshman Alvaro Fonseca will play No. 3, sophomore Cameron Kahle will play No. 4 and freshman Brooks Morrell will play No. 5. Layne was the team MVP and was second on the team in stroke average last season. Park matched the best round by a Falcon last season with a 69. Kahle led the team in season stroke average last season.
