
Falcons fall to Holy Cross, 4-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross scored two power-play goals in the first period and held off Air Force for a 4-1 win in an Atlantic Hockey game Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
Air Force (6-14-2, 2-9-1 AHA) was called for five penalties in the first period and the Crusaders capitalized with two power-play goals. Holy Cross (6-13-2, 5-7-1 AHA) opened the scoring when Matt Guerra scored with a slap shot from the center point at 2:40 of the opening period. Then late in the period, Holy Cross took a 2-0 lead with a second power play goal as Liam McLinskey scored with a wrister from the center point.
Holy Cross (7-13-2, 6-7-1 AHA) took a 3-0 lead when Grayson Constable scored a short-handed goal at 7:04. Just as a Falcon came out of the penalty box for to start a power play, Constable picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone for a breakaway. His first shot was saved but he put back the rebound for a three-goal lead.
The Crusaders netted their third power play goal of the game at 15:45 of the third period. Matt Shatsky's shot caromed off the post and Devon Phillips put back the rebound for a 4-0 lead. With under a minute left, Will Gavin forced a turnover in the neutral zone. Willie Reim then gave the puck back to Gavin who scored with a wrister from the left circle with 28 seconds left.
Holy Cross outshot Air Force, 32-18, in the game. The Crusaders were 3-for-9 on the power play while Air Force was 0-for-5. Senior Austin Park made 28 saves for the Falcons. Crusader Jason Grande made 17 stops.
"When you get outshot almost 2-to-1 and get beat in special teams, there is rarely a happy ending to the story," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They were the better team both nights. We got out-played and out-coached. Holy Cross has a good team and is really good at home. We have not had any success at Holy Cross in a long time. This was a long, frustrating series. We all have a lot of pride and are working hard to get the worm to turn. We just need to stick together and fight through it."
Air Force returns home to host a two-game conference series against Niagara, Jan. 20-21, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
