U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Following a 2-1 performance at Clune Arena against Mountain West opponents, the Air Force women's basketball team is in search of its third-consecutive league win as it heads to Logan, Utah for a season rematch against Utah State.
Falcons at a Glance:
Air Force (9-10, 4-3 MW), averaging 65.1 points per game, shot a season-high .556 from the field against San Jose State.
For the season, a backcourt duo consisting of senior Kamri Heath and sophomore Madison Smith lead Air Force in scoring, averaging 13.3 and 12.6 points, respectively. Freshman Milahnie Perry has led the Falcons through their last three games, averaging 20.0 through that span.
The Falcons currently rank eighth nationally in turnover margin (7.21), ninth in steals per game (12.1) and 14th in turnovers forced per game.
Tip of the Spear:
Kamri Heath leads Air Force in multiple scoring categories: Points (253), points per-game (13.3), field goals (105), field goal attempts (229) and field goal percentage (.459). Heath has posted double-digit scores in 13 games and 20 or more in three contests, an effort underscored by a career-high 27-point outing against Navy in the Falcons' home opener on Nov. 11. Heath's .423 career field goal percentage (257-607) currently ties the Air Force Division I-era career record set by Pamela Findlay from 2004-08.
Heath files in at second to sophomore Jo Huntimer in steals (39) and steals per-game (2.05). The senior has logged a steal in 16 of Air Force's 19 games, including a career-high six steals in a 63-51 win over UCCS on Dec. 7.
Smith's Sophomore Surge:
Into the second season of her intercollegiate career, Madison Smith has stepped into a significant role for the Falcons, averaging over 25 minutes and 12.6 points per game, after playing an average of just six in 2021-22. Smith's 24-65 from three-point land marks a team high in made three-pointers and attempts, while leading current starters with a .365 three-point percentage on the season.
At San Jose State (Jan. 5), Smith led the floor in scoring, resetting her career high for the third time this season with 23 points on 5-7 (.714) from three-point range, leading the Falcons to a 77-64 win.
15 points in the Falcons' 71-68 win over Fresno State (Jan. 14) marks Smith's fifth game in the last six to score in double figures.
Service Before Self:
Sophomore Jo Huntimer leads Air Force in total assists (90), assists per game (4.7) and assist/turnover ratio (1.88) - all categories second among Mountain West competitors behind two-time All-Mountain West selection McKenna Hofschild (Colorado State). On the defensive side, Huntimer leads the program in total steals (41, league high) and steals per game (2.16).
With 83 assists on the year and 205 for her career, Huntimer currently resides in seventh place in assists in the Falcons' Division I history. 214 ties sixth, a position currently held by Falcon alum Jimi Blagowsky (2011-15).
Defend Your Castle:
Air Force is 7-2 in Clune Arena, with wins over Navy, Adams State, UCCS, UTEP, Utah State, and Fresno State and San Jose State. The Falcons' two home losses (73-70 vs. Utah Tech, 61-60 vs. Wyoming) fell to the final possession of regulation.
A 5-1 start to the season in Clune marks a standard which had not been achieved since the program's final year as a member of Division II in 1995-96, in which Air Force went 7-1 at home before closing its season at 7-3.
Milahnie Stepping Up:
Through the Falcons' most recent three-game stretch reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Week Milahnie Perry led Air Force in scoring, averaging 20.0 points per game.
Versus Wyoming (Jan. 11), freshman Milahnie Perry totaled 22 points on 6-10 from the field, doubling her previous career high. The freshman shot an unblemished 9-9 from the free-throw line - another career benchmark – while logging one three-pointer and two rebounds along the way. 12 of Perry's 22 points came in the fourth quarter, willing the Falcons back into the game from a seven-point deficit.
Against Fresno State (Jan. 14), Perry posted 17 points behind 5-8 (.625) shooting and 3-4 from three-point range. Perry's nine-point fourth quarter held Fresno at length, allowing Air Force to hold on for the win.
In the Falcons' 77-70 win over San Jose State on Jan. 16, Perry led Air Force in scoring for the third-straight game, posting 21 points on 8-14 from the field 11 points from Perry in the second quarter stifled a pair of scoring runs for San Jose (2-16, 0-7 MW), notching her second double-digit quarter of the season.
Cardiac Cadets:
Seven games this season have either been decided by two possessions or less, with four of those games - all at home - falling to a single possession. At Colorado (Nov. 19), the Falcons trailed by two points entering the final minute of regulation before falling by eight, threatening the program's first-ever win against a Power Five opponent.

Utah State (4-13, 1-5 MW) enters Thursday's contest fresh off its first Mountain West victory, a 68-58 win on the road over Fresno State. Graduate senior Prima Chellis' 15-point, ten-rebound double-double fueled a comeback from an 11-point deficit to claim victory.
Chellis, along with graduate senior guard Maria Carvahlo scored 12 and 15 points in the Aggies' Dec. 29 loss in Clune.
Carvahlo leads Utah State's season scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game behind a team-high .423 from three-point range.
All-Time/ Last Time:
Thursday marks the 23rd all-time meeting between the two programs. Utah State maintains a 14-8 edge all-time against Air Force. The Falcons have claimed three-straight wins over Utah State, including their most recent 77-63 victory on Dec. 29 in Clune Arena.
25 turnovers forced by the Falcons generating 28 points in the process proved the major difference for Air Force in their Mountain West debut against the Aggies, creating 64 shots on the night at the Aggie basket, and generating 9-21 clip (.429) from distance.

Air Force crafted its most successful season in program history in 2021-22, as the Falcons' 19 overall wins and 11 conference victories were both program-bests. Air Force claimed four season-sweeps of conference opponents, also a program first. The Falcons secured the program's first-ever bye in the Mountain West Tournament where they defeated Nevada to advance to the tournament semifinal round for the first time in program history. 11 wins in Clune Arena proved a Division I record for the Falcons, and the winningest home season for Air Force since the 1991-92 season (13-2).
Coach G Gaining Ground
Head Coach Chris Gobrecht is currently serving her 43rd season as a head coach - the second-longest tenure in Division I women's hoops behind Stanford's Tara VanDerveer (44). Gobrecht's career win tally surpassed 600 wins in the Falcons' Nov. 11 home opener against Navy.
Into her eighth season at the head of the Falcons' program, Coach Gobrecht currently has 65 career Air Force wins to her name, making her the all-time winningest coach at three separate institutions- Air Force, Yale and Washington.
Gobrecht was named 2021-22 Mountain West Coach of the Year following Air Force's successful 19-14 season – A year punctuated by Gobrecht's fourth career WNIT appearance as a head coach, and the Falcons' first postseason appearance and subsequent win in program history – a 64-60 victory over WCC opponent San Francisco on March 17.
