With a three-game Mountain West win streak under its belt, the Air Force women's basketball team heads into Boise, Idaho on Thursday evening for its first season matchup with the Broncos.
Falcons at a Glance:
Air Force ranks ninth nationally in turnover margin (6.90), 11th in steals per game (12.2) and 18th in turnovers forced per game (21.05), all Mountain West-leading figures. In three-point defense, the Falcons have held opponents to a league-low 27.6 percent.
Air Force offensive production is led by sophomore Madison Smith, who currently averages 13.2 points per game; Senior Kamri Heath follows up with a 12.8 average.
What's at Stake:
An Air Force (10-10, 5-3 MW) win would mark the Falcons' first-ever victory in Boise, their first four-game win streak since the 2004-05 season and first-ever four-game run against Mountain West opponents.
Maddie Ice:
Into the second season of her intercollegiate career, Madison Smith has stepped into a significant role for the Falcons, averaging over 24.5 minutes and a team-high 13.2 points per game after averaging just six in 2021-22. Smith accounts for 24 percent of Falcon three-point attempts; 25-68 from three-point land marks a team high in made three-pointers and attempts, while sporting a .368 three-point percentage on the season – second among the Falcon starting lineup.
Service Before Self:
Sophomore Jo Huntimer leads Air Force in total assists (95), assists per game (4.8) and assist/turnover ratio (1.98) - all categories second among Mountain West competitors behind two-time All-Mountain West selection McKenna Hofschild (Colorado State). On the defensive side, Huntimer leads the program in total steals (44) and is even with junior Kayla PIlson in steals per game (2.20).
With 95 assists on the season and 217 for her collegiate career, Huntimer claimed sixth on the program's Division I assists leaderboard, surpassing Falcon alum Jimi Blagowsky (2011-15). 12 more season assists will surpass current fifth-place LaToya Howell (2001-03).
Defend Your Castle:
Air Force is 7-2 in Clune Arena, with wins over Navy, Adams State, UCCS, UTEP, Utah State, Fresno State and San Jose State. The Falcons' two home losses (73-70 vs. Utah Tech, 61-60 vs. Wyoming) fell to the final possession of regulation.
A 5-1 start to the season in Clune marks a standard which had not been achieved since the program's final year as a member of Division II in 1995-96, in which Air Force went 7-1 at home before closing its season at 7-3.
Milahnie Stepping Up:
Through the Falcons' most recent four-game stretch, freshman Milahnie Perry has led Air Force in scoring, averaging 18.0 points per game.
Versus Wyoming (Jan. 11), freshman Milahnie Perry totaled 22 points on 6-10 from the field, doubling her previous career high. The freshman shot an unblemished 9-9 from the free-throw line - another career benchmark – while logging one three-pointer and two rebounds along the way. 12 of Perry's 22 points came in the fourth quarter, willing the Falcons back into the game from a seven-point deficit.
Against Fresno State (Jan. 14), Perry posted 17 points behind 5-8 (.625) shooting and 3-4 from three-point range. Perry's nine-point fourth quarter held Fresno at length, allowing Air Force to hold on for the win.
In the Falcons' 77-70 win over San Jose State on Jan. 16, Perry led Air Force in scoring for the third-straight game, posting 21 points on 8-14 from the field. 11 points from Perry in the second quarter stifled a pair of scoring runs for San Jose, notching her second double-digit quarter of the season.
Cardiac Cadets:
Seven games this season have either been decided by two possessions or less, with four of those games - all at home - falling to a single possession. At Colorado (Nov. 19), the Falcons trailed by two points entering the final minute of regulation before falling by eight, threatening the program's first-ever win against a Power Five opponent.
Broncos at a Glance:
Boise State (8-12, 3-4 MW) struggles to gain momentum in the Mountain West race, having dropped four of its last five league contests. The Broncos' last win occurred at home against Fresno State (60-53), in which Boise generated 32 points in the paint off 17 turnovers.
The Broncos rank eighth nationally in blocks per game (5.5), behind a league-leading 2.70 blocks per game from 6'3" forward Abby Muse. Boise's 41.75 rebounds per game leads the Mountain West behind Muse's 8.2 average.
All-Time/Last Time:
Boise leads the all-time series against the Falcons 20-2; Air Force's two wins against the Broncos have occurred in the last two seasons and within the last three contests.
In their last contest, the Falcons defeated Boise State 77-63 in Clune Arena.
Last Time Out:
On a night when the Air Force women's basketball team struggled offensively more than it had all season, the Falcons managed to pull it together late against Utah State, defeating the Aggies 66-59.
Down by as much as ten points in the early minutes of the final quarter, Air Force (10-10, 5-3 MW) took off on a 16-0 run down the back half of the final frame to overcome 36 Utah State points in the paint, and claim victory in a game which Utah State (4-14, 1-6 MW) held control of for the vast majority.
Freshman Faith Shelton, a defensive anchor for the Falcons down the stretch, tied her career high with nine points on the evening, while setting a new benchmark of 12 rebounds – eight of which were on the defensive side.
Sophomore Madison Smith led the floor with 23 points, fueled by an unblemished 14-14 from the free-throw line – her seventh game of the season with a perfect free-throw percentage, and the second in which Smith shot perfect with ten or more attempts.
Reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Week Milahnie Perry added 12 points to the Falcon tally, marking her fourth-consecutive game to post double-digit scores. In the Falcons' four-game stretch through an eight-day stretch, Perry has averaged a team-high 18.0 points.
Sophomore Jo Huntimer, with five assists on the night, 95 for the season and 217 for her collegiate career, claimed sixth on the program's Division I assists leaderboard, surpassing Falcon alum Jimi Blagowsky (2011-15).
2021-22 Mountain West Recap:
