Falcons will face Arizona State at 7 pm MT Saturday night
TEMPE, Ariz. – Boston University, ranked sixth in the nation, scored three goals in the first period en route to a 5-1 win over Air Force in the first game of the Desert Hockey Classic at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
BU (13-5-0 overall) lit the lamp quickly as Terrier Jamie Armstrong scored on the rush just 23 seconds into the game. The Falcons battled defensively and held BU to that one-goal lead until late in the period. The Terriers used a series of perfect passes in the offensive zone as Wilmer Skoog scored at 14:30 for a 2-0 lead. Skoog scored his second of the game with 33 seconds left in the period with a wrister from the center point.
Midway through the second period, the Falcons got on the board. Luke Rowe carried the puck into the zone down the right side and his shot was saved. Sophomore Clayton Cosentino cleaned up the rebound for his third goal of the season at 7:05. The Terriers answered on the power play as Brian Carrabes scored at 10:02 for a 4-1 lead.
The Falcons held the Terriers scoreless in the third until late in the period. With 3:49 left in the period and trailing 4-1, Air Force pulled the goalie for the extra attacker. With 3:01 left, Will Gavin drew a penalty and the Falcons had a 6-on-4 advantage. The Falcons had a few quality chances and then with 1:19 left, BU's Sam Stevens scored an empty-netter from deep in his own end to make up the final margin.
"We got off to a horrendous start, but I am proud of our guys for battling back," head coach Frank Serratore said. "BU played at a speed limit that we haven't seen in a while. After we got down 3-0, we basically played them even the rest of the game. They are a very, very talented team. But the way our guys battled, I think we earned some respect. Our success this weekend will be determined tomorrow. The question is, can we play the way we played in the second and third period and carry that over to tomorrow."
BU outshot Air Force, 37-30. The Falcons were 0-for-3 on the power play while the Terriers were 1-for-2. Drew Commesso made 29 saves for BU. Air Force junior Maiszon Balboa, making his first career start, made a career high 32 saves in the game.
Air Force (6-11-2 overall) will face Arizona State on Saturday, Jan. 7, 7:05 pm MT in Tempe, Ariz.
