TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State scored midway through the second period and added an empty-netter late for a 2-0 win over Air Force in the consolation game of the Desert Hockey Classic, Saturday, Jan. 7, at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
Arizona State (11-12-0 overall) broke a scoreless tie midway through the second period. Sun Devils Ty Jackson and Dylan Jackson forced a turnover deep in the Falcon end and Ryan Alexander scored at 13:24 for a 1-0 lead.
Early in the third period, a major penalty was called on Air Force, but the Falcon penalty kill did the job as ASU held a 1-0 lead. Air Force pulled its goalie with 1:55 remaining, but Sun Devil Jack Judson scored an empty-netter with 22 seconds left.
Air Force outshot ASU, 32-26. The Falcons were 0-for-1 on the power play and killed all five of the Sun Devil power plays. ASU goalie T.J. Semptimfelter had 32 saves while Falcon junior Maiszon Balboa had 24.
"We played a pretty good game overall," head coach Frank Serratore said. "The margin for error is so thin, especially when you are having trouble scoring. We had some good opportunities, but for whatever reason the pucks just aren't going in for us. I feel bad for the guys tonight, they gave us a pretty darn good effort. We played against some really good competition in this tournament and played five of the six periods pretty well. It is frustrating, but we have to put it behind us and move forward."
Air Force (6-12-2 overall) returns to Atlantic Hockey play next weekend with a series at Holy Cross, Jan. 13 and 15, in Worcester, Mass.
