U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force women's basketball team, showing ever-more frequent signs of its upward trajectory under decorated head coach Chris Gobrecht, seeks out its first 3-1 start to conference play since arriving among the ranks of Division I as the Falcons head to Reno to face Nevada on Saturday afternoon at the Lawlor Events Center.
Falcons at a Glance:
Air Force (7-8, 2-1 MW), with a pair of wins against Utah State (Dec. 29, 77-63) and San Jose State (Jan. 5, 77-64) split by a New Year's Day loss at New Mexico (70-58), ride into Reno looking to open up an early win streak in the Mountain West, before returning to Clune Arena to defend a 5-1 home record.
The Falcons are led on the floor in scoring by a backcourt duo consisting of senior Kamri Heath, averaging 14.8 points per-game and sophomore Madison Smith, who follows up Heath's scoring production with 13.0. Sophomore Jo Huntimer leads Air Force in creating assists, averaging 5.0 per game; Junior Kayla Pilson is the Air Force go-to in rebounds, averaging 5.7 a game and leading the Falcons on the offensive glass with 24 rebounds through ten games played (2.4 avg.).
The Falcons currently file in at tenth nationally in both turnover margin (7.13) and steals per-game (12.6). Additionally, Air Force ranks 20th in turnovers forced per-game (21.47), with all three figures leading Mountain West programs. The Falcons have produced double-digit turnovers in all 15 games, including a season-high 22 at Northwestern on Dec. 17.
The Engine That Makes It Go:
Kamri Heath leads Air Force in multiple scoring categories: Points (222), points per-game (14.8), field goals (90), field goal attempts (199) and field goal percentage (.452). Heath has posted double-digit scores in 13 of the Falcons' first 15 games and scored 20 or more in three contests, an effort underscored by a career-high 27-point outing against Navy in the Falcons' home opener on Nov. 11. Heath's .4122 career field goal percentage (250-593) approaches the Air Force Division I-era career record (.423), set by Pamela Findlay from 2004-08.
Smith's Sophomore Surge:
Into the second season of her intercollegiate career, Madison Smith has proven a critical component of the Falcons' starting lineup, averaging an even 13.0 points per-game. Smith's 23-54 from three-point land marks a team-high in made three-pointers and attempts, while shooting at a .426 clip- also a team high among Falcon contributors.
Smith is currently 25-27 (.925) from the free-throw line, the current ninth-best percentage in the nation. Smith is on pace to reset the Air Force single-season record (.918), set by Madeleine Philpot (2014-15).
At San Jose State (Jan.5), Smith led the floor in scoring, resetting her career high with 23 points on 5-7 (.714) from three-point range, leading the Falcons to a 77-64 win.
Service Before Self:
Sophomore Jo Huntimer leads Air Force in assists (70), assists per-game (5.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.89) - all categories top-two figures among the Mountain West. On the defensive side, Huntimer follows Heath as a major contributor in total steals (32) and steals per game (2.29).
With 75 assists on the year and 197 for her career, Huntimer falls just one assist short of tying ninth in the Falcon record books for all-time assists in the Division I era- a spot held by Lauren Henderson (2004-07).
Defend Your Castle:
Air Force is 5-1 in Clune Arena, with wins over Navy, Adams State, UCCS, UTEP, and Utah State. The Falcons' lone home loss occurred at the hands of a quad-one Utah Tech squad, who escaped Clune with a 73-70 win in the final minute of regulation.
5-1 marks a standard which has not been achieved since the program's final year as a member of Division II in 1995-96, in which Air Force closed 7-1 in Clune before closing its season at 7-3.
The Pack at a Glance:
Nevada (4-9, 1-1 MW), after going 3-8 in non-conference play with a pair of wins in Reno against Stanislaus State (Nov. 20, 85-35) and Milwaukee (Nov. 25, 64-47) and an overtime victory over Idaho in San Diego (Dec. 4, 84-80), split a pair of contests to open Mountain West play. The Pack downed San Jose State 64-47 in its conference debut (Dec. 29), before falling to San Diego State on the road, 80-70.
Nevada distributes the ball evenly across the floor, with all five of its typical starters averaging at least 8.7 points per-game; Forward Lexie Givens leads scoring for the Wolf Pack, averaging 10.3 a contest.
