U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - On a night when the Air Force women's gymnastics team was honoring its two graduating members, the Falcons – along with their two veteran members – showed out in front of a sizable crowd in the West Gym, earning a season-best 195.125.
The Falcons' two seniors being honored as upcoming 2023 Air Force Academy graduates, Amber Boll and Briona Carswell, led Falcon scoring in three rotations, highlighted by a 9.900 performance for Boll on the balance beam.
It was the Falcons' performance on uneven bars which ultimately pushed the Falcons out to a season-best finish, as Air Force posted a season-best 49.075, Air Force's highest team score in the rotation since the 2014 season. In the event, all six Falcon performers set a new season high, with three eclipsing former career marks. Boll's 9.900 led Air Force, setting a new career-best for the veteran Falcon; Velandra Brochi topped her former career-high by 0.025, earning a 9.825; Madison Carlisle also reset her career best with a 9.775, while Ayla McKean (9.800), Leilani Zander (9.775) and Grace Nelson (9.775) posted season bests.
On vault, Boll led Air Force with a 9.750 on the way to a 48.375 team finish.
On the balance beam, Air Force had its second-highest showing of the spring, finishing with a 48.925. Three Falcons tied or set season-highs, led by a 9.875 for Carswell and followed up by a pair of 9.800 performances by Brochi and freshman Kylee Greene.
It was Brochi and Greene who led the Falcons in the floor exercise, both earning 9.825 with Greene tying her career mark. With the evening coming to a close, Boll took the floor as an exhibition showing, performing the first floor routine of her career.
Head Coach Jennifer Green on a Fun Evening at West Gym:
"It was a special evening tonight here. We had great energy, we had a great crowd, and it was fun having Denver – a top ten team – here tonight. On top of all that, it was just a really great competition overall."
Coach Green on Team Performance:
"They did exactly what they've been doing all week, which is exciting to see. From the warm ups I saw great stuff, and they just kind of kept the same energy throughout the evening."
On Consistencies Seen Throughout the Team This Week:
"We're really trying to work on details. We're trying to do some lifting up off the horse, and some better landings on vault – which, when they get a little pumped up, they can get a little over excited. Also, working on handstands and details on bars and stuck landings and they did all that.
"Balance beam, they were trying to be aggressive and own out landings and they were doing pretty good with that. (We had) a little hiccup or two on the floor, but it really was a fun night."
On The Senior's Performances:
"Typically, senior night is hard. It's an emotional time, they want to really show off that they've done great things and often they put too much pressure on themselves. But I think both Amber and Bri went out and really had a good time tonight. It was fun to see that those two were still very light and airy, and not getting caught up in the moment tonight."
On the evening, No. 10 Denver finished with a 197.650; UC Davis edged Air Force with a 195.300.
Air Force women's gymnastics is back out west Friday, Feb. 24 at Sacramento State.
