ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT goalie Tommy Scarfone made 30 saves to lead the Tigers to a 3-1 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey game Friday, Feb. 24, at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, N.Y.
RIT (21-11-1, 17-7-1 AHA) took a 1-0 lead when Gianfranco Cassaro scored with a slap shot from the right circle on the power play at 8:10. Air Force (12-21-2, 8-16-1 AHA) appeared to tie the game on a breakaway by Willie Reim at 11:06. However, after review, it was decided that Reim was offside and the goal was disallowed. Air Force did tie the game about a minute later on the rush. Luke Rowe's outlet pass was tipped in the zone by Blake Bride. In a 2-on-1, Ty Pochipinski set up Bennet Norlin for his third of the season at 12:20. The senior line tied the game as Norlin has now scored in back-to-back games.
The Tigers capitalized on an Air Force turnover behind its own net early in the second period. Carter Wilkie set up Tanner Andrew at 4:37 for a 2-1 Tiger lead.
Midway through the third period, Andrew scored his second of the game and eighth of the season on a flurry in front of the Air Force net. Andrew's goal came at 9:05 of the third period.
The Falcons outshot the Tigers, 31-23. RIT was 1-for-2 on the power play while AF was 0-for-2. Maiszon Balboa made 20 saves for the Falcons.
"I thought RIT did a better job of capitalizing on our mistakes than we did capitalizing on their mistakes," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Maiszon Balboa played a real solid game for us. But their goalie was really good. We had some really good opportunities, and we just couldn't solve their goalie. We had an opportunity to get it done by winning that third period, but we didn't get it done. I thought Scarfone was the No. 1 star of the game. We outshot them by a good bit and he made some timely saves. We competed tonight and we will again tomorrow night."
Air Force and RIT close out the series on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 5:05 pm ET in Rochester.
