
Youngsters Have Strong Day at the Peak

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – A pair of first-place finishes from Air Force sophomore Sydney Weaber highlighted a victorious day for the Air Force track and field team, as it accounted for seven event titles at the Invitational at the Peak on Friday (Feb. 3) afternoon.
Weaber opened the day with a season-best winning time of 5:21.42 in the mile and then used a late kick to finish first in the 800-meter run with a career-best time of 2:27.17. Weaber led her Academy teammates to three of the top-four spots in the mile, as sophomore Tiaree Towler finished second in a season-debut of 5:21.75 and junior Rayna Fruchey placed fourth after crossing the finish line in a time of 5:29.24.
The sophomore was one of two event winners for the Air Force women, as freshman Grace Dailey clocked an event debut of 11:05.75 to finish nearly 15 seconds ahead of the rest of the 3000-meter field.
Dailey's classmate Shayla Padilla picked up a third-place finish in the high jump with a 5'1" clearance, while fellow freshmen Chloe Kinlaw and Nathalia Veal recorded matching clearances of 11'5¾" in the pole vault. Kinlaw matched her career best with that clearance, while Veal's six-inch improvement tied her with her teammate for No. 21 on the program's all-time standings.
On the men's side, freshman Jett Rose debuted at No. 23 on the program's all-time standings following a winning 200-meter time of 21.86 that paced the Falcons to a one-two finish in that event (senior Jacob Trach, 22.17) and recorded a personal best of 6.95 to take second in the 60-meter dash. First-year Falcon Ethan Ashley posted a career-best time of4:24.37 to win an all-freshman mile that included classmates Ashton Higginson (4:27.96), Brenton Maddox (4:30.48 debut) and Zach Ayers (4:33.77 debut)
Air Force rounded out its event winners with victories from juniors John Colizzi and Caiden Macktinger. The former recorded a season-best leap of 23'0½" to win the long jump, while the latter cleared 16'4½" to win the pole vault and lead Air Force to a sweep of the top-four places in the 11-vaulter event (junior Ben Charlebois, 15'11"; freshman Connor Munson, 15'5½"; junior Braeden Holcombe, 15'0").
Fellow junior Philip Hundl won the qualifying heat of the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.16, before clocking a season-best 8.14 to finish second in the finals. Sophomore Seth Meador added a third-place time of 8.16 in the hurdles finals – a mark just 0.02 shy of his personal best. Hundl had an impressive day at the Cadet Field House, adding a runner-up clearance of 6'6¾" in the high jump, as Air Force claimed two of the top four finishes in the 10-vaulter event (sophomore Collin Schulz, fourth at 6'4¾").
Freshman Texas Tanner matched his career best of 53'5" – the 21st-best throw in program history – to lead Air Force to a three-four finish in the shot put (senior Hayden Bullock, 52'5¼"), while also recorded a career-best weight throw toss of 56'2½" to debut at No. 22 on that list of the Academy's all-time standings during a fourth-place finish.
Senior Jaret Prete finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 64'4½", while Tanner and senior Jace Pittman (55'5¾") helped Air Force claimed three of the top-five finishes in that event. Junior Brian Hubbard posted a fifth-place distance of 21'10¼" to join Colizzi in the top-five of the long jump, while classmate Katie Thompson claimed a top-five finish in the 60-meter dash with an 8.02 during both the qualifying and final rounds of her first race of the season at that distance.
The Falcons return to action next weekend (Feb. 10-11), when the squad splits for competition at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston and the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque.
