PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Air Force women's tennis team fell to Grand Canyon, 6-1, in Phoenix on Saturday afternoon.
Arianna Van Houweling's three-set tiebreaker victory over GCU's Valentina Del Marco that awarded Air Force with its lone point of the day and the freshman with her third-consecutive win. Van Houweling's victory improves her dual singles record to 7-2.
Despite dropping just their third doubles point of the season, Falcon duo Isabella Flodin/Abby Cotuna struck first, claiming a 6-4 win over GCU's Lamoreaux/Kocevar, snapping a four-match win streak and improving to 7-0 in dual doubles.
From Head Coach Kim Gidley:
"The team was so close throughout the entire match. The doubles point was a tight decision and we just fell short in securing the point. Credit to Grand Canyon for coming out with great energy.
"As for the singles, we were in every match and won three first sets. The fight was there. We saved multiple match points in the matches we lost. Courtney Swift saved 6 match points in three different games, along with our doubles team of Fitch and Odom. Arianna Van Houweling was the only one to save match points and win the match, which is so tough to do. We've played a tough schedule and are ready to fight in conference."
