
Golfers set to compete in Haskins Award Invitational

THIS WEEK: The Air Force golf team travels to Augusta, Ga., for the 44th Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, presented by Valspar, Saturday-Sunday, April 1-2, at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. Live stats will be available at www.golfstat.com.
THE FORMAT: Golfers will play 36 holes on the first day (April 1) with the final 18 on April 2 at the par-72, 7,086-yard Forest Hills Golf Club. Saturday's round begins at 8:30 am ET with a shotgun start. Sunday's tee times will begin at 8:30 am ET going off of both No. 1 and No. 10.
THE FIELD: In addition to the host school, Augusta University, Air Force will be joined by Central Florida, College of Charleston, East Tennessee State, No. 12 Florida, No. 19 Georgia Southern, No. 6 Illinois, Kennesaw State, Notre Dame, No. 18 Oklahoma State, South Carolina, No. 9 Texas, No. 22 Virginia and Virginia Tech.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The tournament features six teams in the top 25 and 10 in the top 50 in the nation. Texas won the tournament last season with a 54-hole team score of 814 (-50). Longhorn Pierceson Coody won the individual title at 17-under. Past individual champions in the tournament include Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Justin Leonard.
THE LINEUP: The Air Force lineup this week is: 1- Isaac Layne; 2-Cameron Kahle; 3-Brooks Morrell; 4-Ted Davenport; 5-Christopher Park.
LAST TIME OUT: Air Force senior Isaac Layne led the Air Force golf team in the final round of the Bandon Dunes Championship, March 14, in Bandon, Ore. Due to poor weather conditions on Monday, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes, with the final 18 being played on Tuesday. Layne made five birdies on the day, including three in a row, to shoot an even par 72. Layne's 151 (+7) was tied for 40th overall. Sophomore Cameron Kahle shot 76 on day two and came in at 156 for the 36-hole tournament. Freshman Brooks Morrell shot 74 on the final day and shot 158 for the tournament. Freshman Ted Davenport shot 162 and freshman Alvaro Fonseca shot 170. Fonseca recovered from a rough start in round two to play his final nine holes in three-under par, including an eagle on the 363-yard par-4 16th. On his final hole of the day, Fonseca drove the green and made the putt for the team's only eagle of the tournament. Oregon, ranked 28th in the nation, rallied in the final round to win the tournament with a 581 (+5). Oregon State and Utah tied for second at 588 and Boise State was fourth at 589. Fellow Mountain West opponents San Jose State and Fresno State finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Air Force was 18th with a 627. Air Force's second round score of 302 was 23 strokes better than its first round, the second best improvement of any team in the tournament.
LAST TIME IN AUGUSTA: The last time the Falcons competed in the Haskins Award Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta was April 6-7, 2019. Josh Wu and Andy Germann led the Air Force golf team by shooting 74 in the final round. Wu tied for 48th overall with a 54-hole total of 220 (+4). Germann tied for 62nd overall with a 224 (+8). Third-ranked Wake Forest won the team title with a three-day score of 828 (-36). South Carolina was second (-33) while Texas was third (-30). Air Force placed 15th overall with a 901 (+37).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Senior Isaac Layne leads the team with a 76.04 season stroke average. Sophomore Cameron Kahle is second with a 76.17, followed by freshman Alvaro Fonseca (76.91) and freshman Brooks Morrell (77.91). All four have played all 23 rounds this season. Air Force's best team score this season came at the Ka'anapali Collegiate with an 893. The team's low round of the season came in the third round at the Ka'anapali with a 289.
