SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Highlighted by the top collegiate finish in a 5000-meter field that featured nearly 200 runners, four members of the Air Force distance team opened competition at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic this afternoon (March 31) in San Francisco.
In the first track meet of his senior season, Niko Fraser clocked a career-best time of 14:09.80 to earn the top collegiate spot in the 5000-meter run – a finish that would stand throughout an event that featured eight sections and 191 athletes. Fraser paced a trio of Falcons to top-10 finishes in the overall event, as freshman Max Sannes finished third in a debut of 14:10.47, while junior Ryan Child added a season-opening time of 14:18.98 to finish ninth.
Senior Maddie Edwards, the lone member of the women's team to compete at Cox Stadium on Friday, clocked a career-best time of 4:32.60 to finish fifth in her section – and 13th in the full 163-runner field – of the 1500-meter run. With that time, a six-second improvement over her previous best from last weekend's season-opener, Edwards debuted at No. 21 on the program's all-time standings.
While Air Force still has several more hours of competition tonight at the Stanford Invitational, some runners return to San Francisco State tomorrow (April 1) for the final day of the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
