GET TO KNOW SAM GILMAN
Sam Gilman, a native of Hilton Head Island, S.C., is ranked 11th in the championship field of the 3000-meter race after recording an Academy and Mountain West Record time of 7:43.70 to win the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in mid-February. A three-time All-American (2021 cross country, 2022 indoor track, 2022 outdoor track), Gilman anchored the winning distance medley relay and repeated as the mile champion at the Mountain West Indoor Championships on the same track two weeks ago.
DID YOU KNOW?
One of only two Mountain West male runners to qualify to the NCAA Indoor Championships, Sam Gilman is the first member of the men's team to earn a spot on the starting line of the 3000-meter run since Patrick Corona in 2016.
HISTORY 101
The Falcons have combined for 36 All-America accolades at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. With his third 800-meter award in 2020, Michael Rhoads became the program's most decorated individual at the indoor championships. Justin Tyner, the top American finisher in the 5000-meter run at the 2010 championship meet, also collected three indoor honors during his career – two individual awards and one as a member of the distance medley relay in 2011. The women also accounted for 23 All-America awards at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, with Callie Calhoun (3000-meter run) and Jill Wood (1500-meter run) claiming national titles.
BUILDING A DYNASTY
The men's track and field team has accounted for 11 Mountain West championships since 2012. That total, which includes five indoor (2012, 2016, 2018, 2022, 2023) and six outdoor (2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022) championships, is five more than all other Academy programs combined. And, as the school's overall record includes five conference championships in men's cross country (2003, 2015, 2020, 2021, 2022), the Falcons track & field and cross country program has accounted for 16 of the Academy's 18 MW trophies.
GILMAN NAMED MW PERFORMER OF THE MEET
Backed by a pair of conference titles, Sam Gilman was tabbed as the Mountain West Performer of the Meet. The senior opened the competition by anchoring the distance medley relay to the title for the second-straight year, clocked the fastest mile time in qualifying the next day, and closed the meet by posting the fourth-fastest time in MW Championship history to successfully defend his conference championship in the mile – becoming just the third conference runner to ever win back-to-back titles in that event.
COLE NAMED MW COACH OF THE YEAR
After guiding the Falcons to the MW team title, Ryan Cole captured his first MW Indoor Coach of the Year award. It is the seventh overall coaching award for the Falcons' director, as he has also been honored in men's cross country (2015, 2020, 2021, 2022), women's cross country (2016) and men's outdoor track and field (2022).
FALCONS CLAIM PROGRAM-RECORD 18 ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
The men combined for 18 all-conference awards (16 individuals, two relays) at the Mountain West Indoor Championships – a tally that accounted for the most ever by Air Force at an indoor championship meet. The Falcons claimed at least one all-MW (top three) placement in 14 of the 17 events, while posting medalist finishes in the mile run, pole vault, shot put and weight throw.
A DOMINATING TEAM WIN
Scoring at least one point in every event and having all 28 members of its travel roster record at least one scoring finish, Air Force accumulated the conference's highest team score in 14 years as it easily defended its conference title. Tallying 208 points – the third-highest total in MW Indoor history, the Falcons bettered the rest of the conference by 82 points – the largest margin of victory for the men's champion since 2009 and the second-largest since the conference was formed in 2000.
AIR FORCE IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Highlighted by a pair of top-15 marks from Sam Gilman, two Falcons are listed among the nation's Top 25 in the latest TFRRS standings. Gilman is listed 11th in the 3000-meter run (7:43.70) and 13th in the 5000-meter run (13:25.64), while Jalan Rivers is ranked 25th in the high jump following his first collegiate seven-foot clearance (7'1").
COMING UP
With the conclusion of the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Falcons turn their attention to the outdoor season – which begins next weekend (March 17-18) at the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Early Bird Invitational in Pueblo.
