AZUSA, Calif. – Backed by the third-fastest steeplechase in program history, three members of the women's distance squad recorded Air Force Top 10 marks late Thursday (April 13), as eight Falcons took part in the first night of the Distance Carnival at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa. In addition to the three top-10 marks from the women, the men saw three runners debut on the Academy's Top 20.
AIR FORCE TOP-10 MARKS
No. 3 – Rachel Crytser, 3000-Meter Steeplechase (10:20.21)
No. 8 – India Jones, 10,000-Meter Run (34:53.73)
No. 10 – Ally Peterson, 10,000-Meter Run (35:23.86)
Junior Rachel Crytser, who first took over the program's No. 3 spot in the steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational two weeks ago, improved her time at that position this evening, as she opened the Carnival with a personal-best finish of 10:20.21. Deleting five seconds off her previous best, Crytser finished fifth in her section and 31st in the full 119-runner event.
The women's success continued in their next race, as freshman India Jones and sophomore Ally Peterson both accounted for Air Force Top 10 times in the 10,000-meter run. Jones, running in the first 10K of her career, clocked a time of 34:53.73 to debut in eighth on the program's all-time standings, while Peterson, who entered the meet ranked 10th on the Academy standings, deleted nearly 28 seconds off her previous best time to retake the No. 10 spot in her first 10K of the year after crossing the finish line in 35:23.86.
The men also made a pair of improvements to Air Force's standings for the longest race of the outdoor season, as junior Ryan Child and freshman Max Sannes accounted for top-15 marks in their 10,000-meter race. Child, who finished second amongst collegiate runners (fourth overall), deleted more than 23 seconds off his previous best to move from 23rd to 14th on the all-time list, while Sannes, third in the collegiate field and sixth overall, finished with a debut time of 29:35.46 – the 15th-fastest time in Academy history and a new Air Force Freshman Class Record, as he bettered Child's previous time from 2021.
In addition, sophomore Jason Renze debuted at No. 20 on the program's all-time standings of the men's steeplechase, as he recorded a 9:11.47 to finish sixth in his section. Running his first steeplechase of the year, Renze posted a 10-second improvement over his event debut on the same track last May.
Prior to tonight's Distance Carnival, the first five events of the decathlon were contested under the rainy conditions of Cougar Stadium, with juniors Brian Hubbard and Braeden Holcombe standing in ninth (3525) and 10th (3425), respectively, after the first day.
Bookending Thursday with a pair of career-best marks, Hubbard accounted for the highest Day 1 total of his career. The junior posted personal-best times in the 100-meter (10.92) and 400-meter (51.13) events, while adding an outdoor season debut of 21'5½" in the long jump, a distance of 37'8½" in the shot put, and a clearance of 5'9¾" in the high jump. Holcombe recorded a season-best time of 11.51 in the 100-meter dash, while completing his day with a 21'2" in the long jump, a 38'2" in the shot put, a 5'10¾" in the high jump and a 50.81 in the 400-meter dash.
Hubbard and Holcombe return to action tomorrow (April 14) afternoon for the final five decathlon events, while the rest of the team will split their time between the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa and the Beach Invitational in Long Beach.
