LONG BEACH, Calif. – Taking down the Academy Record in the discus throw highlighted a stellar day in the throwing circle for Air Force senior Hayden Bullock, who led members of the track and field team during the final day of competition at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach on Saturday (April 15).
ACADEMY RECORD
Hayden Bullock, Discus Throw (194'8")
Bullock unleashed a career-best throw of 194'8" – a personal improvement of 14 feet – to take down the Academy Record that Grant Hamilton had held since 2016. Adding more than seven feet to the previous program standard on his third attempt, Bullock finished second in a field that featured 81 throwers. In addition to setting the Air Force Record, the senior also recorded the farthest distance by any service academy thrower, as he added a foot to the one-year-old All-Academy Record in that event.
Prior to his record-setting throw in the discus, Bullock accounted for the program's third-best mark in the shot put. Recording a career-best throw of 59'9", Bullock added nearly four feet to his previous best, as he moved from eighth to third on the Academy's all-time standings and finished sixth in a field that included nearly 70 throwers.
AIR FORCE TOP-10 MARKS
No. 3 – Hayden Bullock, Shot Put (59'9")
Junior Caiden Macktinger recorded a career-best clearance of 16'11½" to finish 10th in the 47-athelte pole vault competition and move into 18th on the Academy's all-time standings, while sophomore Jalan Rivers finished within the top half of the high jump (12th) with a height of 6'9". Back in the throwing circle, another pair of Falcons finished within the top halves of their respective fields, as junior Gerrit Tamminga finished 32nd in the discus throw (163'1") and freshman Texas Tanner placed 24th in the shot put (54'4½").
A quartet of sprinters placed their names among the top of the men's sprint results on Saturday. Sophomore Javin Bostic, junior Jackson Connelly and the senior duo of Jacob Trach and Zac Larrier combined for a time of 41.01 – the third-fastest mark of the season, as they opened the day with a fifth-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. Bostic came back with 11th-place finishes in the 100-meter (10.45) and 200-meter (wind-aided 21.51) races, while guiding Connelly (wind-aided 10.50) and Larrier (wind-aided 10.55) to top-15 finishes in the 70-runner event. Despite running in three different heats, the trio went 11-12-13 in the overall standings, while Trach added a top-25 finish with a wind-aided 10.69. Larrier joined Bostic in the top-20 of the 200-meter standings – a race that featured nearly 60 runners – with a time of 21.68 in his first 200 of the season with a legal wind.
On the women's side, sophomore Taylor Rioux had another impressive day on the track, highlighted by a top-10 finish in the 400-meter dash. Recording the second-fastest time of her career (56.03), Rioux finished ninth in a field that featured nearly 60 runners. She returned to the track at Jack Rose Stadium later in the day to run a 25.33 into the wind and finishing within the top 25 of that 72-sprinter event.
Air Force returns to competition next weekend, as a small contingent heads to Stanford for the Payton Jordan Invitational on April 21-22.
