Survive-and-advance season has arrived for the Air Force women's tennis team, as the Falcons head to Las Vegas to open their bid for a tournament title in the 2023 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship.
With a four-seed and first-round bye in-hand, the Falcons (10-11, 6-4 MW) draw a rematch of their regular-season finale, facing No. 5 Colorado State, 11 a.m. local time at the Darling Tennis Center on Thursday morning. The winner of that match will advance to the semifinal round, to be played on Friday at 10 a.m. MT.
Falcons at a Glance:
Air Force planted its flag on doubles play in 2022-23, as the Falcons finished regular-season dual competition with an 18-3 record as a team in doubles, and an unblemished 10-0 mark against Mountain West opponents, combining for a 37-16 (.698) spring record.
On court two, Isabella Flodin/Abby Cotuna lead the way with a 14-3 mark in dual doubles; the duo closed the regular season with seven-straight wins and a 7-3 Mountain West record. Air Force's No. 1 duo of Sydney Fitch/Alexis Odom follow up at 13-3, riding a three-match streak into the postseason and an 8-2 conference record.
Freshmen Arianna Van Houweling and Abby Cotuna both lead singles production for Air Force:
Van Houweling (court six) holds a team-best 14-4 record, closing the regular season the winner of seven of her last eight completed contests, five of which were won in straight sets.
Cotuna (court five) holds a 7-6 dual singles record behind a 5-1 performance against Mountain West opponents.
Last Time Out:
Air Force closed regular-season competition, falling 4-3 at Colorado State on Apr. 22. The Falcons secured their undefeated status in doubles behind wins for Flodin/Cotuna (6-2) and Fitch/Odom (7-5), then it was Fitch and Van Houweling on their respective courts claiming singles wins.
At 3-3, the match fell to a third-set tiebreaker in Cotuna's court-five contest against Viktor Zhadzinskaya, after saving four match points to force the tie; Zhadzinskaya clinched the match, scraping past Cotuna with a 7-5 win.
