OPENING UP THE HOME PITCH
The Falcons return to the Academy for the first of a four-match home stint, taking on 2022 Sweet 16 squad Western Michigan on Thursday (Aug. 31). Air Force wraps up the weekend hosting Sacramento State on Sunday (Sept. 3). The matches are slated for 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, at Cadet soccer Stadium.
LAST TIME THEY PLAYED
Thursday's meeting with the Broncos will mark the first match between the squads in program history.
Former rivals in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Sacramento State leads the all-time series with Air Force by a 13-12-1 margin with only two of those meetings coming outside MPSF play. Sunday marks the first meeting between the two since 2019 when the Hornets posted a 2-0 win at home, while it will be the first meeting between the two in Colorado since 2010 -- a 2-1 Air Force win. Of Sacramento State's 13 wins in the series, 11 have come at home as the Hornets are just 2-8 in Colorado.
A LOOK AT WMU
During the first two tests of the season opening road trip, the Broncos saw a heartbreaking 2-0 defeat to #12 University of Vermont and a 3-1 bounce back victory over Kyle Beckerman and Utah Valley State. This past Sunday, the Brown and Gold saw a well-rounded victory over the Wolverines: Carson Hodgson scored his first two career goals, Charlie Sharp tallied a goal and an assist, and defenders Jonathan Robinson and Jaylen Shannon recorded an assist each during the match. Additionally, goalkeeper Ethan Brandt saw a career best seven saves in the victory over Utah Valley to put himself in a tie for the 9th most saves in NCAA Division I men's soccer as of Monday. After Sunday's win, coach Chad Wiseman continued to cement his legacy within the men's soccer program: Wiseman now sits three victories away from becoming the second coach in program history to eclipse 110 career victories. Wiseman, currently with 107 victories, is 18 wins away from sharing the all-time wins record (125 wins) with Blake Glass (1983-1997).
UP NEXT
Air Force wraps up a four-match home stint as the Falcons host Central Arkansas on Friday (Sept. 8), and UC San Diego on Sunday (Sept. 10). Action at Cadet Soccer Stadium is slated for 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
DEFEND THE TURF
The Falcons vehemently defend their home turf, going 44-10-3 (.800) while playing at home in the last five seasons. In 2018, the Falcons were perfect at home (10-0) for the first time in program history. In 2017, Air Force won a program-best 11 home matches, going 11-1 on the home pitch for the campaign.
LAST WEEK
Air Force opened the 2023 season with a pair of road matches in the Northeast. The Falcons fell to service academy rival Army West Point, 3-2, on Thursday, and were blanked by Seton Hall, 3-0, on Sunday. Senior team captain Luke Hill scored both goals for the Falcons on the weekend.
