Head coach Taylor Hollander discusses first months at USAFA, her new team and previews the Bedford Cup
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force women's tennis, with a new coaching staff leading the way and a core of talented newcomers on its roster, opens the 2023-24 season with the hosting of its annual Bedford Cup, set to start on Sunday morning, 10 a.m. at the USAFA Tennis Courts.
The Falcons will play host to over 80 competing individuals belonging to 11 separate institutions. The four-day event includes four singles compass draws and one doubles bracket, all to be played out over the course of the week.
The field will consist of players representing the following institutions:
Air Force, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Denver, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana State, New Mexico, Utah State, Wyoming.
Competition opens on Thursday morning with the first two rounds of doubles; Friday opens with the doubles quarterfinal round at 9 a.m., proceeded by the first two rounds of singles, with semifinal and championship rounds for all flights to be played out on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
From Coach Hollander on the Falcon's opening event:
"Coach Gidley set a very high bar with this tournament, and I just want to get as many matches in as possible. I want all the teams to feel welcome … we've got a great banquet on Saturday night, so it's a nice way for all the girls to get to interact outside of their teams."
Hollander on what she hopes to see out of the Falcons:
"(The team is) going to take what they've learned at the Academy and bring it out to the court. They're going to have the professionalism, hold their shoulders back, we're going to keep our emotions close … I think that's where they're completely bought in, and we're going to keep working on it…
"The little professional points we've been working on – not letting your emotions and frustrations get the better of you. We've been working on conditioning, running every single ball down … No matter what, what I want to see if them giving it their all – From start to finish, even in the warmup…."
