DENVER – Placing all five scoring runners in the top 10, the younger members of the Air Force men's cross country team easily won the Roadrunner Invitational this morning (Sept. 16) in Denver, tallying just 28 points during the 8K circuit around Washington Park.
Finishing fifth out of 108 runners – and third among the scoring runners, sophomore Brenton Maddox (25:12.82) paced Air Force to its victory, as the Falcons amassed just 28 points to better the rest of the eight-team meet by 23 points. The sophomore led his classmates to four of the next five finishes, as Jayden Nats, Ethan Ashley and Will Allen finished sixth (25:14.68), eighth (25:19.12) and ninth (25:22.03), respectively. Freshman Patrick Lawson rounded out the scoring lineup with a 10th-place time of 25:29.39 in his collegiate debut.
Overall, the men placed six in the top 11, as freshman Josh Razo added an 11th-place time of 25:33.51.
On the women's side, members of the Falcons' two youngest classes finished third in their first 6K race of the year, placing four in the top-25 for 89 points Freshman Michaela Workman paced the women's contingent, clocking a time of 22:53.58 to finish ninth out of 82 runners. Sophomore Ricky Fetterolf finished 11th with a time of 23:04.86, while classmate Beatrice Shea finished within the top 20 following a time of 23:24.03. Freshmen Liliane Aittama and Camryn Bodine rounded out the Falcons' scoring lineup, as the duo finished 24th (23:56.15) and 42nd (25:01.94), respectively, in their first collegiate 6K cross country races.
"This morning's races at Washington Park were positive steps forward for our women and men's development," Air Force cross country coach Laura Bowerman said. "We had strong runs from our Virginia duo of Michaela (Workman) and Ricky (Fetterolf). All of our sophomore men showed a lot of progress, grouping up for a total team effort. It was great to see freshmen score on both sides too."
The rest of the Falcons' squad returns to action next Saturday (Sept. 23), when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the Virginia Invitational – and a chance to get their first look at the site of this year's NCAA Cross Country Championships.
