THIS WEEK: Air Force hosts the 54th Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Sunday-Tuesday, Sept. 10-12, at the Academy's Eisenhower Golf Course. The 24-team, 54-hole tournament, is a two-part event with the team competition being played on the Blue Course and the individual event on the Silver Course. Live scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com.
THE FORMAT: The team competition will be held on the Blue Course with tee times beginning at 8:30 am MT on Sunday and Monday and at 7:30 am MT on Tuesday. Each five-member team will count the top four scores each day. All individuals will play on the Silver Course, with a shotgun start at 9:30 am on Sunday and Monday and at 8:30 am on Tuesday. The practice round will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, beginning at 8:00 a.m.
THE FIELD: Along with Air Force, the 24-team field includes Cal Poly, Colorado State, CSU Northridge, Idaho, Incarnate Word, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, George Washington, Gonzaga, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, SIU- Edwardsville, Southern Utah, Utah State, Utah Tech, UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, Valparaiso, Weber State, Wofford and Wyoming.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational is in its 54th season. Formerly known as the Rocky Mountain Invitational and the Pikes Peak Invitational, the event was re-named the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in 2003 to honor the legendary coach who headed up the Air Force program for 25 years and is a member of the Air Force Athletics' Hall of Fame.
EISENHOWER BLUE COURSE: The Blue Course of the Eisenhower Golf Club opened in the 1959 and is named after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony. The 7,541 yard, par 72 course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and was ranked as the third best military course in the nation (PGA.com) and the 24th best college course (Golf Week) in the country. The Silver Course, designed by Colorado architect, Frank Hummel, is the newer of the two Eisenhower courses. It is shorter than the Blue Course, but makes up for its lack of length with fast, tricky greens, narrow fairways and many hazards. It is built in a beautiful setting, with many spectacular mountain views and a view of the cadet chapel. The course, a par 72 with no out-of-bounds, compliments the Blue Course very well because it requires more accuracy than length off the tee.
LAST SEASON: Colorado State won the tournament with an 834 (-30), just three shots off the tournament record. Colorado was second at 859 (-5). San Jose State and New Mexico State were tied for third at 861 (-3). Air Force was 22nd at 913. Alvaro Fonseca, in his first collegiate tournament, was the top Falcon over the 54-hole tournament with a 225. Cameron Kahle shot 229, Christopher Park came in at 237 and Brooks Morrell shot 238. CSU's Connor Jones won the individual title at 203 (-13), just two off the tournament record. In the GMFI Individual Tournament on the Eisenhower Silver Course, Utah Tech's Davis Heslington won with a 205 (-11). Colorado State's Jay Pabin was second (208) and Wyoming's Patrick Azevedo was third (207).
LAST WEEK: The Air Force golf team was the top service academy the Folds of Honor Collegiate, Sept. 4-6, at the American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich. The Falcons shot a 306 in the final round for a 54-hole team score of 915. Navy shot 936 and Army came in at 938. Junior Cameron Kahle led the Falcons on the final day with a 74. Kahle made two birdies for his best round of the tournament. Freshman Eli Huntington shot 75 on the final day, playing the final five holes in one-under.
