Match play resumes this week for the Air Force women's tennis team, as the Falcons prepare to host Abilene Christian and Buffalo on Thursday, Jan. 25 and Friday, Jan. 26, respectively.
In week two of dual competition, the Falcons are on the hunt for their first win of 2024, after falling in a narrow 4-3 decision on Jan. 19 to North Dakota and running into nine-time Summit League title-winner Denver on Jan. 20, falling 4-0 at DU.
Abilene Christian:
The Wildcats arrive at the Academy in search of their first dual win, after falling at UTSA (6-1) and Texas A&M (7-0). Graduate senior Andrea Guerrero sports ACU's one win to open the dual season, after downing UTSA's Cassie McLay, 6-4, 7-5. ACU closed 2022-23 with an 11-13 mark, falling in the opening round of the WAC Championships.
Buffalo:
Buffalo, opening match play at Wyoming on Jan. 24 prior to facing the Falcons, looks to build upon a 2022-23 campaign which saw the Bulls finish 20-8, falling in the opening round of the MAC Tournament in 2023.
MAC Second-Team selection Ambre Amat led the Bulls in 2022-23, earning a career and team-best 24-5 record in singles losses, while going 18-11 in doubles.
Last Time Out:
On the road at Denver following a long evening in the Cadet Gym the previous night, the Air Force women's tennis team took on nine-time Summit League champion DU, falling 4-0 at the hands of the Pioneers on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles, Air Force fell on lines one and two. On court one, Pioneer duos Andrea Burguete Beltran/Britt Pursell defeated Arianna Van Houweling/Isabella Flodin. The Falcon pair, down as much as 4-1 in the set, claimed two more games in the set but ultimately went down 6-3.
On line two in singles, Nadia Kojonroj fought deep into her first set against DU's Pursell, but fell 7-5. The freshman trailed 2-1 in the second set when the match was called.
After dropping her first set 6-3, fellow newcomer Joselyn Limbago led 4-3 in her second set against Claudia Martinez de Velasco, when Denver clinched the win on court one.
From Coach Hollander on the Falcons' opening weekend:
"I'm overall very proud of how we showed up for our matches this weekend. The team is starting to buy into the big picture for this program. They showed grit and heart from start to finish. A great starting point for the spring season."
