U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force women's basketball team, after going down big in the first half against New Mexico, managed to surge back into the contest in the early stages of the third quarter but could not find sustained success, falling to the Lobos 66-51 on Saturday afternoon in Clune Arena.
The Falcons managed to turn UNM over 23 times to just Air Force's six – generating 19 points in the process. Yet the Lobos found their way to the Falcon basket, scoring off the dribble and creating 34 points in the paint.
From the tip, Air Force struggled to find shots, shooting 3-18 from the field and 0-6 from three in the first quarter. The Lobos worked their way up to an 11-2 start before freshman Alexis Cortez was found out along the right baseline for a jumper to break the spell. A spurt of production from Milahnie Perry (19 pts) and Cortez gave some life to the Falcon offense down the final minutes of the first quarter, but Air Force was outscored 14-3 from 2:15 in the first through the opening minutes of the second. The Falcons trailed by as much as 18 before halftime, but managed to take advantage of a Lobo cold spell and gets out to a 7-2 run to close the half down 34-20.
Air Force made a rapid comeback to open the second half, outscoring New Mexico 16-3. A dialed-up Falcon defense gave the Lobos troubles, forcing UNM into seven turnovers for the quarter – three of which were committed consecutively in a one-minute span, with two of those happening in the UNM backcourt. Through the first four minutes of the third quarter, the Falcons generated nine points off of New Mexico turnovers to trail by just a point. From there, UNM grounded itself, putting up a 12-0 Lobo run to push a 13-point lead.
In the fourth, the Falcons managed to shoot 50 percent from three, including a top-of-the-arc triple for Perry to beat the buzzer early on, but failed to gain ground on the Lobos for the remainder of the contest.
