Grand Canyon (4-5-2, 1-1 WAC) set the tone early with a strike from key player Bright Nutomutsi via touches from Jony Munoz and Ben Assane Fall in the 16th minute. It was Nutomutsi's seventh goal of the season.
Air Force took five shots in each half with eight attempts being taken on goal. Senior team captain and AF shots leader Carter Rizzo took three shots, all on target. The Falcons climbed out of a first half deficit behind the class of 2027's Sean Flynn and Ryan Daunt who scored their first collegiate goals to propel Air Force to victory.
Flynn broke the Falcons' month-long scoring drought with an unassisted goal in the 49th minute to ignite the team. Just 10 minutes after, Daunt claimed the lead and eventual game-winner for AF via assist from freshman Dane Baker who notched his first collegiate assist. The gritty effort marked Air Force's first two-goal match this season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Will Collins recorded two saves on the night in his first collegiate win. Air Force's defense was anchored by Kyle Skevington, Noah Higbie, and Andrew Durkin who clocked 90 minutes of action on the pitch. Skevington has played every minute of AF soccer this season.
Grand Canyon, succumbing to Air Force for the fifth time in the last five meetings, took 14 shots in the effort. Nutomutsi, Jorge Lopez, and Ben Assane Fall took three attempts each. GCU keeper Leon Schmidt made an impressive six saves against a motivated Air Force squad.
Air Force will have a chance to improve on their conference standing this Sunday (Oct. 13) when they take the pitch against UT-Rio Grande Valley on Sunday.
