Falcons Fall to Nevada in Straight Sets

RENO, Nev. – The Air Force volleyball team lost a straight-set contest to Nevada this evening (Oct. 10) at the Virginia Street Gym in Reno. After falling 18-25 in the opening frame, the Falcons dropped the final two sets by matching 15-25 scores.
Junior Ashley Bible and senior Mekayla Dedo posted matching stat lines, recording a team-high six kills on .267 hitting (6-2-12), while freshman Grace Fiaseu hit at a team-leading .417 clip, following five kills on 12 attempts and no errors. Senior Ella Tschuor and junior Greta Hans both registered a pair of service aces, while freshman Mia Loyd tallied 14 assists, junior Jordan Suan collected 10 digs, and classmate Alex Hatchett accounted for three blocks (all assisted).
Nevada raced out to a fast 5-0 start that sent the Falcons into an early timeout. The Wolfpack added one more score, before Tschuor tallied a kill to put the Falcons on the board (1-6). The senior served up an ace on the next play, as Air Force used a 4-0 run to cut into the Wolfpack's lead. Despite kills from Bible and sophomore Annamaria Ramos, Nevada doubled Air Force up at the 12-6 mark. Dedo tallied the next three kills for the Falcons, as she traded points with the Wolfpack over a six-score span - while a 3-0 run from Air Force that included kills from Ramos and Fiaseu, as well as another Tschuor ace, cut the Falcons' deficit to three (12-15). Kills from Bible and Ramos cut the margin to two (15-17), while strikes from Hatchett (17-19) and Tschuor (18-20) maintained that margin (16-18), but Nevada scored the final five points for the 25-18 win.
Bible earned the Falcons' first score of the second set (1-3), but – despite a kill from Hatchett and a service ace from Hans, the Wolfpack jumped out to a 9-3 lead. The Falcons added kills from Tschuor and Dedo, as well as a block from Fiaseu and Ramos, but Nevada pushed its advantage to 16-9. Hans added her second ace of the set during a four-point swing by the Falcons that cut the Wolfpack's lead to three (13-16). Dedo and Tschuor added kills, but Nevada took the second set by a 25-15 margin.
Nevada opened with another fast start in the third, scoring the first eight points, before Fiaseu put down a kill to stop their run. The freshman added a second strike, while Hatchett and Bible also put down kills by the 4-9 mark. The Wolfpack pushed their lead to six (6-12), before Dedo put down a kill and teamed up with Hatchett for a block on back-to-back plays. Fiaseu added two more kills and an ace, but the Wolfpack completed the sweep with another 25-15 win.
The Falcons head to Logan, Utah, on Saturday (Oct. 12) to take on Utah State at noon.
