Air Force Falls to Spartans in Four

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force volleyball team dropped a close 3-1 contest to San Jose State this afternoon (Oct. 19) at the Academy, as the Falcons fell in 18-25, 25-23, 24-26, 19-25 sets to the visiting Spartans.
Junior Ashley Bible and freshman Grace Fiaseu tallied 12 kills apiece, while senior Ella Tschuor added 11 for the trio to account for 35 of the team's 50. Fiaseu, who hit a match-high .304 (12-5-23) on the day, also led the Falcons in blocks with four assisted stops, while Bible collected 11 digs for her second double-double of the year. The setting duo of freshman Mia Loyd (21) and senior Ellie Eichhorn (20) combined for 41 of the team's 48 assists, while Loyd added a pair of service aces. Junior Jordan Suan rounded out the Falcons' stat leaders with a match-high 15 digs.
Tschuor opened the match with a solo block, while kills from Bible and sophomore Anna Leahy gave Air Force a 3-1 lead. The Spartans evened the score two plays later, but an ace from Eichhorn and kills from Bible and Tschuor), quickly pushed the Falcons' advantage back to three (7-4). San Jose State responded with six of the next seven points and, eventually, took a two-point lead (11-9), before junior Alex Hatchett stopped the run with a kill. A kill from Fiaseu helped Air Force tie the set at 13, but the Spartans scored the next five –and eight of the next nine – to extend its lead. The Falcons' added two more scores, but San Jose State opened the match with a25-18 win.
Air Force jumped out to another 3-1 lead in the second, following an ace from Loyd and back-to-back kills from Fiaseu. Tschuor added three-straight points (two kills, ace) to extend the Falcons' lead to four (6-2). Bible put down a score to half a short three-point swing by the Spartans, while kills from Fiaseu and senior Mekayla Dedo – and Loyd's second ace, sent Air Force into the media timeout holding a 16-11 advantage. The Spartans responded with a 6-1 run that tied the set at 17-all, before Bible and Leady added kills that returned the lead to Air Force at the 19-18 mark. TTschuor put down a kill to put the Falcons in a 20-20 tie, before teaming up with Fiaseu for a block that tied the set at 21. Leahy put down a set-tying kill at 22, while an errant attack from the Spartans and a kills from Bible and Fiaseu gave Air Force the 25-23 victory.
San Jose State came out fast in the third, jumping out to an 8-4 lead. Air Force responded just as quickly, as two kills from Tschuor – and a strike from Bible pulled the Falcons within one at 7-8. A block from Leahy and Fiaseu kept the Falcons within one (9-10), while two kills from the freshman headlined a 6-2 run by the Falcons that gave Air Force a 15-14 lead at the media break. Back-to-back kills from Dedo helped to maintain that one-point margin (18-17), while another strike from the senior, as well as a kill from Fiaseu, gave Air Force a 21-19 lead. The Spartans evened the set two- plays later , before Tschuor and Fiaseu pushed the Falcons to set-point (24-22). However, the Spartans rattled off four-straight points for the 26-24 comeback win.
The Spartans continued their scoring streak in the fourth, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Fiaseu and Bible halted the run, while Tschuor, Leahy and Dedo pulled the Falcons within one at 7-8. Air Force tied the set at 10, while a kill from Dedo evened the score at 11. San Jose State pushed ahead with the next give scores, before Fiaseu put down a kill and teamed up with Leahy for a block (14-18). The scoring trio of Tschuor, Fiaseu and Bible added kills, but the Spartans completed the win with a 25-18 win.
The Falcons remain at the Academy on Thursday (Oct. 24), when they close out their three-match homestand against Wyoming. The 6:00 p.m. (MT) match at Cadet East Gym will close out the first half of the Mountain West season – and kick off a weekend that includes a road trip to Colorado State on Saturday, Oct. 26.
