Falcons Suffer 3-1 Setback to Wyoming

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force volleyball team closed out the first half of the Mountain West season with a 3-1 loss to Wyoming this evening (Oct. 22) at the Academy. After coming back for a thrilling 29-27 win in the opening frame, the Falcons fell 11-25, 18-25, 25-27 to the visiting Cowgirls in the only match of the season between the two Front Range programs.
Junior Ashley Bible led the Falcons with 12 kills, while senior Mekayla Dedo added 11 on .308 hitting (11-3-26). Junior Alex Hatchett collected three blocks (all assisted), while freshman Grace Fiaseu added two, including a solo stop. The freshman joined classmate Mia Loyd in serving up aces for the Falcons, while Loyd led the Falcons with 20 assists. Senior Ella Tschuor collected a team-high 11 digs, while sophomore Sophia Dasilva added 10.
Air Force traded scores with Wyoming in the opening minutes of the match, before a kill from Dedo at five-all sparked a run that sent the Cowgirls to the bench with a 5-10 deficit. Wyoming quickly responded and, despite kills from Bible and Tschuor, scored 12 of the next 15 points to take a 17-13 lead. A block from Fiaseu and sophomore Annamaria Ramos ended a seven-point swing during the Cowgirls' run, while a kill and ace from Fiaseu, as well as a block from Tschuor and Hatchett, tied the set at 18-all. Wyming four of the next five points to take a 23-19 lead, but the Falcons stormed back to tie the set at 23 behind a pair of kills from Dedo. The Falcons traded points with the Cowgirls, as Bible (24), a Wyoming error (25) and Fiaseu's solo block (26) produced set-tying scores. After the Cowgirls evened the score at 27, a kill from Tschuor headlined the final two-point swing that secured the Falcons' furious comeback and a 29-27 victory.
Wyoming came out quick in the second set, scoring the first five points and jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Kills from Bible (two) and Tschuor pulled Air Force within four (7-11), but the Cowgirls responded with another long run to push their lead out to nine, as they doubled up the Falcons by an n 18-9 mark. A strike from Fiaseu halted the run and put the Falcons in double figures (10-19), but Wyoming scored six of the final seven points for the 25-11 win.
Despite a pair of kills from Tschuor, the Cowgirls jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the third. The senior put down her third strike of the set at 4-7, while scores from Hatchett and Bible brought the Falcons within two at 7-9. Tschuor added another kill (8-10), but Wyoming [ushed its lead out to six (116-10) – and eventually eight (20-12). Dedo and Hatchett combined for a block, while Dedo and Fiaseu scored on back-to-back plays to pull Air Force within five at the 16-21 mark. Freshman Brooksie Isham registered a pair of kills off the bench, but Wyoming secured the match advantage with a 25-18 win.
With back-to-back kills, Fiaseu and Isham helped the Falcons to a three-all tie to start the fourth set, while a strike from Dedo gave Air Force a 5-4 lead. The Falcons extended their advantage to four (10-6) following scores from Bible (kill), Dedo (kill), Loyd (ace) and Fiaseu (kill), but a 7-1 run by the Cowgirls flipped the lead back to the visitors. Trailing 11-13, Air Force tallied back-to-back kills (Hatchett, Isham) to tie the set at 13. Wyoming went ahead again (16-13), but Isham and Tschuor produced a pair of kills to stop the run. Back-to-back kills from Dedo evened the set at 19, while two-straight kills from Bible gave Air Force at 21-19 lead. The pair accounted for two more kills, as Air Force took a 24-21 lead, but Wyoming answered with the next four to tie the set at 24 and reach match point on the ensuing play.
