WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley goalie Connor Hasley recorded his third consecutive shutout as he led the home team to a 2-0 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey America game, Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Bentley Ice Arena in Waltham, Mass. Bentley swept the series and moved into first place in Atlantic Hockey.
Late in the first period, Air Force turned the puck over at its own blue line and Bentley's Ryan Mansfield skated in on a breakaway. A split second before Mansfield released the puck, the horn went off and the period ended. The goal was reviewed and disallowed in a scoreless first period. After another video review, a major penalty was called on Falcon center Clayton Cosentino and Bentley started the second period on a five-minute power play.
Air Force (8-8-0, 5-3-0 AHA) killed the power play with nine clears, two blocked shots and allowing just three shots on goal. Back at even strength, Bentley (9-4-1, 8-2-0 AHA) took a 1-0 lead on a shot by Sam Duerr from a sharp angle on the left side at 6:46. Bentley defenseman Nick Bochen was then given a five-minute major for a hit on Mitchell Digby. Air Force had two shots on goal, but Bentley killed the penalty.
Midway through the third period on the rush, Nik Armstrong-Kingkade put back a rebound of Ethan Leyh's shot for a 2-0 lead at 12:05. With 3:53 left in the third, Air Force pulled the goalie but Bentley blocked two shots and Hasley made three saves to seal the win.
"It was a hard-fought game and the effort was there, but we sabotaged ourselves with an avoidable penalty," head coach Frank Serratore said. "I'm proud of the guys that were in the lineup that battled and scrapped. Bentley is a good team that competed hard. We got the compete level that we wanted. We were Falcon physical we were tough to play against. We put ourselves in position to win the third period and win the game, but it wasn't to be."
Each team had 24 shots on goal and each team was 0-for-3 on the power play. Guy Blessing made 22 saves for the Falcons. Hasley made 24 saves for Bentley
Air Force continues its four-game road swing with a pair of non-conference games at Brown, Friday-Saturday, Nov. 29-30, in Providence, R.I. Â
