PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  Brown's Charlie Gollob scored in the fifth round of the shootout in a 1-1 overtime tie with Air Force in a non-conference game Friday, Nov. 29, at Meehan Auditorium in Providence, R.I.
In a scoreless first period, Air Force had several quality chances. Owen Dubois hit a post with eight minutes left in the first period. Then with 33 seconds left and the Falcons short-handed, Austin Schwartz forced a turnover and skated in on a breakaway. Schwartz was hooked from behind, drawing a penalty shot. However, Schwartz's penalty shot was saved by Brown goalie Lawton Zacher.
In the second period, Brown got off to a quick start and outshot Air Force, 14-4, in the middle 20 minutes. Guy Blessing stopped all 14, including a diving blocker save on a shot by Brian Nichols with 10 minutes left in the period.
Late in the third period, Air Force (8-8-1) took a 1-0 lead on Schwartz's fifth goal of the season. Andrew DeCarlo and Mitchell Digby picked up assists on the goal that came on 13:09 of the third. Just over four minutes later, the Bears scored their first power-play goal of the season. Tyler Kopff's one-timer was redirected by Brian Nichols with 2:33 left in the third.
Neither team scored in overtime as the game officially ends as a tie. In the shootout, Brown's Max Scott and Air Force's Brendan Gibbons each scored forcing a sudden death shootout. In the fifth round, Gollab scored to end the game.
Brown (2-3-2) outshot Air Force, 31-27, in the game. Blessing made 30 saves for the Falcons while Zacher made 26 for the home team. Brown was 1-for-5 on the power play. Air Force was 0-for-2.
"This was an evenly played game by two teams that are struggling offensively," head coach Frank Serratore said. "It was poetic justice in a 1-1 tie with two offensively challenged teams. Â We scored a nice goal and then they scored a nice goal. The team that wins tomorrow night wins the series. The fourth period of today's game is basically tomorrow afternoon. Our kids played hard and their kids played hard. The two best players in the game were both goalies."
Air Force and Brown conclude the two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 30, in Providence, R.I.
