Falcons at a Glance:
Junior Milahnie Perry and senior Madison Smith both lead Falcon scoring, averaging 16.2 and 14.5 points, ranking fifth and seventh against the Mountain West, respectively. 30.7 combined points per game for Perry/Smith currently stands as the second-highest scoring duo in the league, just behind New Mexico's Viane Cumber/Destinee Hooks.
As a team, the Falcons' scoring offense (67.15 ppg) currently ranks sixth among the Mountain West, while sporting a scoring margin of +8.31 (fifth). From the free throw line, Air Force averages .739, the third-best conference mark, with four Falcons (Perry, Smith, O'Hollaren, Devaughn) averaging .771 or better from the stripe with 10 or more attempts.
Sophomore Jayda McNabb, while also averaging 877 points per game, leads Air Force in rebounding, averaging 8.0 (4.6 OFF/G, 3.4 DEF/G), the fourth-highest mark in the Mountain West. McNabb's 4.62 offensive boards per game currently ranks 14th nationally and second among Mountain West competitors, while being one of only two players in the country shorter than 6'0" averaging 4.62 offensive rebounds per game.
McNabb was one of 13 players across Division I to log a double-double in the opening week of competition, earning 16 points and 10 boards in Air Force's 73-66 win over South Dakota (Nov. 8). Since then, she has added another (17 PTS, 10 REB vs. UCCS, Nov. 19) and recorded double-digit rebounds in six games to date.
Senior point guard Jo Huntimer's 3.9 assists per game and 2.32 assist/turnover ratio are both second league-wide.
Defensively, the Falcons top the Mountain West in turnovers forced per game (23.77, 18th nationally), turnover margin (+7.00, 24th nationally) and steals per game (13.0, 15th nationally) while also sporting the second-highest scoring defense in the league (58.85). Smith, sporting 36 steals on the season, leads the Mountain West and ranks 25th nationally in the category.
A Historic Start:
Air Force opens Mountain West play in 2024-25 at 10-2, marking its first ever 10-win non-conference and the first such occurrence since the 1991-92 season. Starting 9-1 on the year with just an overtime loss at Army (Nov. 15), Air Force got off to its best ten-game start since Maj. Danny Fowler's 1982-83 Falcons went 12-1. The Falcons are currently 6-0 in Clune Arena for the first time since 1985-86, when Air Force started at home with seven-straight wins.
1,000 Point Watch:
Sporting 969 and 952 points for their respective careers, Smith and Perry are both on track to become Air Force's 19th and 20th 1,000-point career scorers, and the first two since Riley Snyder capped a 1,614-point career from 2018- 22.
If both Perry and Smith cap 1,000 points in the 2024-25 season, they will be the fourth such pair to do so in the same season in program history.
Service Before Self:
Jo Huntimer leads Air Force in total assists (51), while currently sporting the second-best assist average in the Mountain West (3.9). 319 career assists currently ranks second in Air Force DI history and seventh all-time (Briana Autrey-Thompson, 2018-22), a spot in the record books secured in the Falcons' win over Milwaukee on Nov. 28 in Puerto Rico.
Winning Trends:
In all 10 wins to start the season, Air Force has:
- Held opponents to less than 70 points (14 consecutive wins);
- Forced more turnovers than opponents (15 consecutive wins);
- Scored more points off of turnovers than opponents;
- Led in the game with five minutes to go (57 consecutive wins in regulation).
Air Force is Undefeated When...
- Leading after first quarter (5-0);
- Scoring 70 or more points (8-0);
- Shooting better than home opponents (3-0);
- Out-rebounding opponents (3-0);
- Attempting more free throws than opponents (6-0);
- Attempting 15 or more free throws (7-0);
- Scoring more second chance points than opponents (8- 0);
- Scoring more three-pointers than opponents (8-0).
The Magic Number...
Air Force has won 28 consecutive games in which they have scored 70 or more points, a streak which extends back to Dec. 29, 2022.
The Falcons have held opponents to 70 points or less in all 10 wins this season and in 14-straight victories.
Completing the Mission:
Since Dec. 21, 2021, Air Force has only lost two games after holding a lead with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Both losses took place in overtime, falling that day in 2OT to UTEP, and dropping a 57-51 contest to Army at West Point on Nov. 15 of this season.
Not including overtime games, Air Force has won 57 consecutive contests ending in regulation after holding a lead at the five-minute mark in the fourth quarter.
An Even Dozen:
Air Force has at least 12 steals in 10 of its first 13 games to start the season, a figure which ranks second nationally among similar company, with Longwood leading the country. The Falcons' streak of six-straight games with 12 or more takeaways to open 2024-25 was the longest active streak in Division I at the time.
Last Time Out:
Air Force Women's Basketball, looking to put a bow on a historic start to its season in 2024 and extend early successes into Mountain West play, was unable to overcome shooting woes throughout Sunday's contest, as the Falcons fell 69-63 To New Mexico in Clune Arena.
The Falcons' go-to scorers, junior Milahnie Perry and senior Madison Smithh, once again led offensive production, scoring 19 and 18 points, respectively. Sophomore Jordyn Devaughn added 10 points to the score sheet, notching a season high.
Both UNM and Air Force (10-3, 0-1 MW) went back and forth in the early stages of the game, as UNM and Air Force traded leads before the Lobos bookended the opening quarter with a 10-0 run to lead 22-15.
In the second, Perry and Devaughn both hunted down baskets on back-to-back drives, cutting the Falcons' deficit to one possession, but the Lobos closed the first half outscoring Air Force 6-2, sending the Falcons into the locker room down only 31-25 despite going 5-18 from the field in the second quarter.
Entering the third quarter, the Falcons whittled away at New Mexico's lead behind four points apiece for both Devaughn and fellow sophomore Keelie O'Hollaren. A 6-0 Falcon run from O'Hollaren's four and a jumper from junior Emily Adams cut Air Force's deficit down to a single point, but UNM answered with six points in the Falcon paint, resulting in a 43-39 Lobo lead heading into the final quarter.
Air Force, down by as much as nine points with just under three minutes to go in the game, managed to quickly cut the UNM lead back to a one-possession game again behind a pair of made three-pointers for Smith. With two minutes remaining, a travel call on UNM's Viane Cumber was converted into Smith's second trey in the quarter cut the Lobos' advantage to 60-58 with 1:20 to go to give the Falcons a final shot at taking back the lead, but Cumber's fourth-made three-pointer of the game fell on the following possession, essentially putting the game out of reach for the Falcons.
In foul territory, O'Hollaren sunk a three-pointer from the left corner, leaving the Falcons only down 65-61 with 13 seconds to go, but not enough time to overcome Lobo free throws as time expired.
