Sprint Records Fall in Field House Finale
2/16/2024 8:56:00 PM | Track and Field
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Both Air Force Records in the 60-meter dash fell on Friday (Feb. 16), as the track and field team capped the home portion of the indoor season – and this era of the Cadet Field House – with an impressive finale at the Air Force Last Chance. Headlined by the program records from freshman Brooke Colman and junior Javin Bostic, the Falcons made nine improvements to the Academy Record Book.
Coleman kicked off the Falcons' record-setting sprint spree, as she crossed the finish line of the 60-meter dash in 7.68 – a time that matched the program standard Cresha White had held since 2010. Claiming the top collegiate finish, Coleman placed second overall in the 12-sprinter race. Bostic responded in the very next event, crossing the finish line of the men's race in 6.66 to better his own one-year-old Academy standard. The time, which knocked 0.01 seconds off his previous best from last season, was third in a loaded 34-sprinter field – and just 0.001 out of second.
Overall, Bostic led the men to four top-10 finishes in the men's sprint, as sophomore Jettason Rose (6.88), senior Jackson Connelly (6.91) and freshman Jace Martin (6.92) finished 8-9-10, while freshman Anna Lindsley joined Coleman in the top five of the women's race with a career-best time of 8.11.
Coleman was one of two Falcons to rewrite the Top 10 of the women's all-time standings, while four more Falcons – including Lindsley – recorded marks that impacted the program's extended record book.
Freshman Kayla Beach recorded a career-best leap of 18'3¼" to finish within the top-half of the long jump field (fifth) and move into No. 6 on the Academy standings, while Lindsley added a personal-best distance of 17'7½" to jump seven spots to No. 15 on the all-time list and senior Katie Thompson, who already holds the program record, led the trio with a runner-up leap of 18'6".
Senior Rebecca Wusinich clocked a career-best time of 4:57.20 (adjusted for altitude) to debut at No. 23 in the Academy Record Book and pace the women to a 1-2 finish in the 16-runner event (junior Ally Peterson, career-best 5:02.37a). Senior Alexxis Brown improved her own No. 24 distance on the program's weight throw standings (47'1"), while sophomore Sam Loida became the fifth Falcon to debut in the Academy Record Book for 800 meters, as she won the event with a personal-best time of 2:17.37a (No. 24 all-time).
The women collected three more top-five finishes on Friday, as Beach and classmate Casey Nixon finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.46) and shot put (39'1¼"), respectively, and senior Amanda Fraga raced to a career-best 26.51 to earn the same placement in the 200-meter dash.
On the men's side, sophomore Ethan Ashley debuted at No. 17 on the program standings in the mile (4:05.03a), while winning the 21-runner event and leading Air Force to a pair of top-three finishes (freshman Roman Thomas, third at 4:12.12a). Thomas' classmate Devin Jordan recorded a winning height of 6'8¾" to debut in a tie for No. 23 on the program's all-time standings, shortly before posting a distance of 45'6½" – the second-best mark of his collegiate career – in the triple jump.
The men had several strong groupings among the top of results for the 3000-meter run and 60-meter hurdles. Freshman Josh Razo was the top collegiate finisher (second overall) with an altitude-adjusted time of 8:14.68 in the longest race of the night, while sophomore Brenton Maddox (8:38.70a), freshman Benjamin Davenport (8:25.58a), and sophomore Tanner Lindahl (8:32.87a) rounded out the top five. Senior Seth Meador clocked a time of 8.06 – a mark just 0.01 off his PR – to finish second in the 15-hurdler race and pace junior Darek Hackett (8.11), senior Philip Hundl (8.12) and senior Braeden Holcombe (8.17) to top-five marks.
Sophomore Texas Tanner won the shot put with a throw of 58'11¾", while freshmen Alec Falk and Mitchell Blakeslee finished second (career-best 49'3") and third (48'8¼"), respectively in the 14-thrower event. Seniors Brandon Lindner (23'6¾") and John Colizzi (season-best 22'6¼") went 1-2 in the long jump, while freshman Tanner Woodring matched his collegiate best of 15'7" to win the (nearly) all-Air Force pole vault and classmate Jonah Hochstetler posted a time of 1:56.10a to capture the top collegiate finish – and second overall – in the 800-meter run.
Fellow freshman Zachary King picked up a top-five finish in the 400-meter dash (49.94, fifth), while Martin posted a time of 21.91 to finish fourth out of 25 runners in the 200-meter dash – the final collegiate race to be held on the flat track of the Cadet Field House before renovations begin next month.
With the regular season complete, the Falcons turn their attention to the postseason, which begins next Thursday (Feb. 22) at the 2024 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque.
