ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Air Force senior Braeden Holcombe accounted for the second-best heptathlon total in Academy history – and the best since 2007 – this afternoon (Feb. 3), as four members of the Falcons' track and field team wrapped up competition at the New Mexico Collegiate in Albuquerque.
Holcombe, who recorded his best Day 1 total on Friday (2916 points), posted a final improvement of nearly 200 points on Saturday, as he finished third with a 5471-point score. Posting top-five scores in the three final events, Holcombe moved four spots to No. 2 on the Academy's all-time standings. After recording a 60-meter hurdles time of 8.27 – a mark just 0.02 off his personal-best, Holcombe tallied a season-best 15'5" in the pole vault and concluded the day with a season debut of 2:44.79 in the 1000-meter run.
Competing in his first collegiate heptathlon, freshman Wyatt Curl debuted at No. 17 on the program's all-time standings, amassing 4837 points over the two-day meet. Opening the day with 2433 points, Curl posted a career-best time of 8.96 in the 60-meter hurdles, before clearing 15'5" in the pole vault and using a late push down the stretch to finish the 1000-meter run in a debut time of 2:43.91.
Brian Hubbard also wrapped up two days of action in the heptathlon, finishing ninth with 4927 points. The senior, who opened the day with 2676 points, closed out his first heptathlon of the year with an 8.34 in the 60-meter hurdles, a 14'5¼" in the pole vault, and a 3:04.40 in the 1000-meter run.
In the only other event on the Falcons' schedule today at the Albuquerque Convention Center, senior Caiden Macktinger recorded his fourth 17-foot clearance of the season during a 17'2¾" performance in the A-section of the pole vault (sixth).
After splitting for two meets this weekend, the Falcons will regroup next week and head to Chicago to make the program's first appearance at the Windy City Invitational on Feb. 9-10.
