U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Sacred Heart scored three unanswered goals and held off Air Force for a 3-2 win in an Atlantic Hockey game Friday, Feb. 9, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
Air Force (14-16-1, 11-9-1 AHA) drew first blood late in the first period. Senior captain Luke Robinson kept a puck in at the blue line that led to a mini 2-on-0 at the net. Will Gavin made a short pass at the top of the crease and Parker Brown scored his eighth of the season at 17:17. With just over two minutes left in the period, a major penalty, and game misconduct, was called on SHU defenseman Hunter Sansbury for a hit on Brian Adams.
In the middle of the major power play, the Falcons were called for too many men on the ice, cutting the major to just a three-minute power play. Sacred Heart (14-14-2, 14-7-1 AHA) killed the major, and then scored two goals for a 2-1 lead. SHU forced a turnover and Pioneer defenseman Connor Hutchison scored on a rebound of his shot in the slot at 10:31. Late in the second period, the Pioneers knocked down a Falcon clear attempt. Andrius Kulbis-Marino took a shot from the right point that was blocked, but he gathered the puck in the circle and scored at 17:16 for a 2-1 lead.
Early in the third period, Pioneer winger John Jaworski forced a turnover and Mikey Adamson set up Marcus Joughin for a one-timer in the slot at 3:52. Late in the period, Parker Brown sent a puck down to the goal line for Chris Hedden. Hedden found Clayton Cosentino in the slot for a one-timer. Cosentino's 10th goal of the season cut the SHU lead to 3-2 with 3:38 remaining. With 1:20 left, the Falcons pulled the goalie for the extra attacker, but were not able to find the equalizer.
Air Force outshot Sacred Heart, 33-13. SHU goalie Justin Robbins made 31 saves while Falcon goalie Guy Blessing made 10. Each team was 0-for-3 on the power play.
"The turning point in this game was us not scoring on that major power play.," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We were up 1-0 at the time. We needed to take advantage and we didn't and it cost us. Â We shot ourselves in the foot with that too many men on the ice penalty. That cost us two minutes of the major. This was a hard-fought game and we showed some resiliency to come back and get that goal late."
Air Force and Sacred Heart conclude the two-game league series on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 5:05 pm at the Academy.
