U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force women's tennis – and a core of Falcon faithful – brought the energy out at the Academy courts on Friday morning, but the Falcons ultimately went down, 4-0, at the hands of No. 65 San Diego State.
Air Force found itself falling in a razor-thin doubles contest, as lines two and three vied for the opening point. At the 30-minute mark, all three courts were tied at 3-3, before the Aztecs claimed victory on the first flight (Yasmine Kabbaj/Mya Petchey won 6-3 over Nadia Kojonroj/Arianna Van Houweling). Both of the remaining two courts – played by Alexis Odom/Isabella Flodin and Joselyn Limbago/Giovanna Sanchirico – went into the 6-6 tiebreak, where Limbago/Sanchirico fell, 7-2, to cede the doubles point to the Aztecs.
Odom/Flodin, dueling with 8-3 SDSU duo Andjela Skrobonja/Andreea Velcea, trailed just 8-7 in their tiebreak when San Diego State clinched on court three.
In singles, Air Force went down on lines six, one and three in order. Sanchirico, on line five playing Velcea, took her first set, 6-4, after leading by as much as 4-1. The freshman led 2-0 in the second, threatening a straight-set win, when SDSU secured the shutout.
On line four, Flodin, after falling in a narrow 7-6 first set, had just opened her second when the match was called. Kojonroj, taking on No. 84 Skrobonja, dropped the opening set, 6-2, but was tied at 4-all when Air Force fell on court three.
Coach Hollander recapping Friday's contest:
"We had a good showing in doubles today. The team brought their energy and never fell into playing at San Diego's pace. We played within ourselves, played at our speed and we were right there with them the entire time. I was happy to see that we were close on doubles across the board. In the past, we've had one or two pairs show up and maybe the others don't - It was promising to see all three firing today at the same time and were all close decisions. It was just a few points here or there that cost us. We're going to keep pushing forward on that."
Closing thoughts from coach:
"Overall, even though we lost, I'd still take this team over our opponent today. We came out with professionalism, fight, and heart, and I'd take them any day over anyone else."
