A Start for the Books:
Air Force, entering week three of the 2024 season with an unblemished 5-0 scoring advantage over opponents, boasts 4-0 and 1-0 shutouts in its first two contests - Earning back-to-back shutouts against opponents for the first time since downing Navy (1-0) and Army (2-0) consecutively in 2021.
A 4-0 victory over Northern Colorado in the Falcons' season opener represents the program's first four-goal game and first 4-0 shutout since defeating Fresno State in similar fashion on Oct. 24, 2014. An Eleanor Musgrove hat trick was the headline of the evening in Greeley, as the junior secured Air Force's first three-goal individual performance since Mia Otero scored three against UNLV on Oct. 1, 2021.
Last Time Out:
The Air Force women's soccer team overcame a monstrous challenge in the early stages of its 2024 season, defeating California Baptist 1-0 on Thursday evening in the Falcons' 2024 home opener.
Sophomore Chase Borntreger provided what proved to be the winning punch in just the sixth minute of play, finding the back of the CBU net after an Air Force free kick from just beyond the Lancers' 18 deflected off the left glove of goalkeeper Bella Lister. Borntreger was positioned perfectly to take control of the deflection and slip the ball past CBU, notching her first goal of the season and the eventual game winner.
The Falcons (2-0) once again provided evidence that their offense is one to take seriously, as they logged 17 shots on the evening, seven of which were on goal. Sophomore Kendall Rippley led Air Force with six shots with three on-frame; Borntreger logged three, with a pair on-goal including the game-winner; Freshman midfielder Mai Mateaki added two.
Junior goalkeeper Kylie McElroy earned her second shutout in as many career starts, facing three saves on the evening and stifling multiple threatening plays at the Air Force net. Air Force's shutout over CBU Thursday marked the Falcons' first back-to-back pair of clean sheets since downing Navy (1-0) and Army (2-0) consecutively in 2021.
The Lancers, falling behind early, never once relented on the Falcons, putting up 11 of their 15 shots in the second half. CBU's Kaylee Hauck led the game with eight shot attempts, putting three in front of McElroy.
CBU, despite now sporting a 1-2 record, entered Thursday's contest seeking retribution after falling just 1-0 to a No. 23 USC team in Riverside just four days prior. The Lancers closed their 2023 season with an 11-2-6 record while leading the WAC in goals-against average (.684) and save percentage (.840), while sporting one of the most potent offenses in the Division I.
Hawaii at a Glance:
The Rainbow Wahine aim to correct a three-match skid, falling to Utah State (3-0), Baylor (1-0) and Portland (1-0) after opening their 2024 season with a 3-2 victory over Georgia Southern.
Hawaii closed its 2023 with a 5-8-3 record, going 1-4 in its final five contests and dropping the opening round of the Big West Tournament, 2-1, to Cal Poly.
GCU at a Glance:
The Lopes enter 2024 following a program-defining 2023 season which concluded with a 14-5-4 record and a 7-0-3 mark in its final ten matches on the way to a WAC Championship. GCU went down in a narrow 1-0 loss to a ranked USC in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, falling on a penalty kick in the 66th minute to the Trojans after holding the contest scoreless the rest of the way. A force in the WAC in 2023, GCU led its league in goal differential (34, 14th nationally), total assists (56, 10th nationally) and total points (166, 10th nationally). With a contest against North Dakota State on deck prior to facing Air Force, Grand Canyon arrives in Hawaii sporting a 2-1-1 record, falling 1-0 to Arizona in its season opener, then going 2-1 against Charleston Southern (W, 3-0), Utah (T, 1-1) and Little Rock (W, 4-1).
All-Time Versus Hawaii/GCU:
Air Force is 2-1 all-time against Hawaii, splitting the last pair of meetings and winning 2-1 in the series debut on Oct. 31, 1996 - the only match the two programs competed in while sharing conference membership in the WAC. Thursday's contest against the Rainbow Wahine marks the Air Force's first-ever visit to O'ahu.
In 2023, Air Force hosted Hawaii at Cadet Soccer Stadium, defeating them 3-1.
The Falcons are 1-0 over GCU, sporting a 1-0 win over the Lopes at home in 2013.
New-Look Falcons:
Air Force, sporting just 16 competitors from the 2023 season, brought in a freshman class nine strong, forming out an Air Force roster composed primarily of underclassmen for 2023. With nine true freshmen on the roster, Air Force has the second-most in the league behind Fresno State.
Non-Conference Outlook:
A challenge worthy of an Air Force program aspiring toward its first-ever Mountain West title, the Falcons will face a gamut of teams in the non-conference which combined for a 63-43-27 record in 2023, one conference tournament champion (Grand Canyon), two conference tournament runners-up (Army, Northern Arizona) and four programs which finished in the top-half of the final RPI rankings for 2023 (California Baptist, 142; Grand Canyon, 80; Montana, 96; Army, 113).
