U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – With their fall seasons underway, both Air Force men's and women's tennis teams turn their sights toward Washington D.C., as the Falcons prepare to take on the Commander-In-Chief's Challenge, set for Friday through Sunday at the prestigious Army and Navy Club on the weekend of its centennial anniversary.
The event will be conducted in a round-robin, mock dual format, featuring doubles and singles matches between all three service academies. Each team will face off with one another, with each match viewed as an individual event. Singles will be carried out best two of three sets with a super tiebreaker in the third to accommodate for time constraints; Doubles will be a single set with a 6-6 tiebreaker.
With the team split over the weekend due to prior commitments, the Navy men's roster will be rounded out with members from the Georgetown men's program.
The Air Force women opened their season on strong footing, going 21-15 and 10-10 as a team in singles and doubles, respectively. Falcon successes at Bedford were highlighted by freshman Sofia Mavor, who went 4-0 in the Charlie draw to win Air Force's second-ever singles title at the event. Mavor and doubles partner Arianna Van Houweling, after falling in their opening match, broke off three-straight wins to win the western final on the way to a 3-1 start. Four other Falcons (Nadia Kojonroj, Joselyn Limbago, Alexis Odom, Giovanna Sanchirico) opened their respective singles campaigns at 3-1.
The Falcon men opened 2023-24 at the Dar Walters Classic, hosted by Boise State (Sept. 13-15). Air Force, with four competitors in play (Kyle Garner, Matthew Staton, Langdon Tingleaf, Luke Wolf,), accrued a handful of victories and aims to build on those successes this weekend in D.C.
