Air Force Drops USF Challenge Opener to Dons

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to to San Francisco this evening (Sept. 20) during the opening match of the USF Challenge. Playing on the Dons' home floor – War Memorial at The Sobrato Center, the Falcons fell in straight 13-25, 20-25, 18-25 sets to the tournament hosts.
Senior Ella Tschuor and junior Ashley Bible led the Falcons with six kills apiece, while freshman Grace Fiaseu led the team in hitting (.288, 5-1-14) and blocks (five, 1-4), while tying senior Mekayla Dedo for the team leader in aces (one). Juniorr Jordan Suan had 13 digs, while freshman Mia Loyd assisted on 15 of the team's kills.
Back-to-back kills from sophomore Annamaria Ramos helped Air Force to a quick 3-1 start, but the Dons responded with 15 of the next 18 points to take a 16-6 advantage. Sophomore Anna Leahy, junior Gret Hans and and classmate Alex Hatchett accounted for the Falcons' scores during that run, while strikes from Bible and Tschuor (two) helped put Air Force in double figures (10-20). Ramos and Hatchett teamed up for a block, while Ramos added her third kill, but San Francisco opened the match with a 25-13 win.
Air Force traded the first six point with USF, with a kill from Dedo and a Leahy/Fiaseu block giving Air Force a 3-2 start. After the Dons strung together three-straight points, the Falcons responded with three of their own (Tshcuor kill, Dedo block, Bible kill) to take a 7-6 lead. Air Force extended its margin to two (9-7) following back-to-back scores from Bible (kill, block with Fiaseu), but San Francisco rattled off eight-straight points (9-15) before Fiaseu stopped its run with a kill. Air Force cut its deficit to three (12-15) – and eventually two (14-16) off two USF errors. The Falcons maintained that deficit at 16-18 following a 3-0 run that included kills from Tschuor and Loyd. Bible added two more kills, but San Francisco won the second set by a 25-20 score.
Fiaseu opened the third set with a kill and solo block, while a service ace from Dedo helped Air Force tak a 4-2 opening. The Dons tied the set at five, before Hatchett handed the lead back to Air Force with a kill. The teams played to a seven-all tie, but the Dons scored six-straight points, before Leahy put down a kill that helped cut the Falcons' deficit to three (9-12). San Francisco pushed ahead again to take a 16-10 lead and, although Air Force added three kills (Tschuor, Bible, Hans), and two blocks (Bible/Fiaseu. Tschuor/Fiaseu). San Francisco completed the sweep with the 25-18 win.
Air Force returns to War Memorial at the Sobrato Center tomorrow (Sept. 21) morning, when it closes out the USF Challenge – and non-conference schedule – against Seattle at 11:00 a.m. (PT).
