Falcons Fall in Non-Conference Finale

SAN FRANCISCO – The Air Force volleyball team closed out the non-conference season with a tough 3-0 loss to Seattle this morning (Sept. 21) in San Francisco. After a late comeback fell short in the first (18-25), the Falcons were unable to hold two late leads, falling 26-28, 25-27 over the final two sets.

Junior Ashley Bible led all players with a match-high 11 kills and was one of five Falcons to record an ace on the day. Freshman Mia Loyd (14) and junior Greta Hans (11) – servers of two more of the Falcons' aces – combined for 25 assists, while junioe Jordan Suan tallied an ace and  12 digs, and sophomore Anna Leahy paced the Falcons with four blocks – including one solo stop. In addition to her offensive prowess, Bible added three blocks (two solo, one assisted), while freshman Grace Fiaseu matched that tally (one solo, two assisted) and collected the Falcons' final ace.

Bible put down the opening point of the match, while Suan added an ace to give Air Force a 3-2 lead. The Falcons continued to lead following a pair of kills from senior Mekayla Dedo, while a solo block from Leahy put the score at 6-5. Despite another pair of kill from Bible, the RedHawks used two long scoring runs to take an 18-8 advantage. A kill from senior Ella Tschuor put the Falcons in double figures, while Air Force benefitted from five Seattle errors to climb back within four (17-22). Bible added a kill and Air Force earned a block from Tschuor and junior Alex Hatchett, but Seattle won the opening set 25-19.

The Falcons came out strong in the second, as multiple scores from both Bible (kill, ace) and sophomore Annamaria Ramos (two kills) gave the Falcons a quick 5-3 lead. Air Force pushed its advantage to eight (13-5) following a run that included kills from Fiaseu, Bible and Hatchett. Tschuor put the Falcons at 15 (15-8), while Ramos registered the squad's 20th point (20-13). Seattle slowly crept back into the match, despite kills from Bible and Hatchett (23-18). Loyd put down a kill, but the Redhawks used a 6-1 run to tie the set at 24. Kills from Tschuor (25) and Fiaseu (26) returned the Falcons to set -point, but Seattle completed the late comeback with three-straight points for the 28-26 win.

Air Force pulled within one (6-7) following another kill from Bible and a block from Fiaseu and Leahy. The Falcons maintained that margin (9-10) with scores from Bible (kill), Fiaseu (ace) and Hatchett (kill), but the RedHawks used a run to swing its lead to four (14-10). Tschuor added two kills, while a strike from freshman A;ysa Walker and back-to-back Fiaseu/Leahy blocks gave Air Force its first lead (17-15) since the opening point. Fiaseu added a kill at the 19-18 mark to spark a three-point run that stretched the Falcons' lead to 21-18, but Seattle used another run to reach set point at 24-22. An ace from Loyd tied the set at 24, while a kill from Tschuor evened the score at 25, but the RedHawks finished the sweep with a 27-25 win.

With the non-conference season complete, the Falcons turn their attention to the Mountain West. League play gets underway with three-straight home contests, beginning with San Diego State on Sept. 26.
