U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force Women's Gymnastics opened its 2025 season in strong form, scoring a 193.375 win on Friday night over LIU in Cadet West Gym.
"I am super proud of how the team handled themselves throughout the entire night," fifth-year Head Coach Jennifer Green said. "From warm ups to the end of the meet, they kept focused on their commitments in each event and celebrated each other."
Without skipping a beat from her historic freshman season, sophomore Maggie Slife finished the evening being dubbed all-around champion, closing with a pair of first place finishes on uneven bars and floor exercise on the way to closing the Falcons' season opener with a 39.175.
Freshman Alyssa Bigler finished her collegiate debut second in the all around (38.275). Bigler, in her first-ever event as a Falcon, earned a first-place finish on vault, leading the way with a 9.825.Bigler's podium performance underscored a 48.650 team finish – a score good to match Air Force's season high from last year. Following up on Bigler's first-place routine, sophomores Slife and Olivia Raife – also her first start – both earned a pair of 9.725s to finish with a share of fourth place.
"Vault has been one of our top focuses when we've been recruiting," said Green. "We wanted to increase our difficulty and have the courage to go big in competition. Each one completed the mission. Now once we dial in our landings and we will be in a good spot."
On uneven bars, Air Force finished with a 48.175. Slife stuck her landing on a double-back with a full twist, scoring a 9.825 to secure her spot in first place. Freshman Allie Misenheimer set the bar high in her first ever showing, finishing with a second-place, 9.775.
Moving over to balance beam, Bacott (9.700) and Slife (9.775) both earned the top spot in the event, before Kylee Greene finished off the Falcons' showing on the event, scoring a meet-high 9.850 to earn her fifth-straight 9.800 or better, extending a streak originating back to March 23rd of last year.
Closing on floor exercise, Slife, showing as the final gymnast of the night, matched Greene's 9.850 to close with her second first-place finish of the evening; Floor specialist Gabriella Meccia earned second, scoring a 9.675, while Gianna Martyna rounded out the podium in third, scoring a 9.600.
Green on her freshmen competing for the first time tonight:
"The freshmen's contributions were truly amazing tonight. I am impressed with the way they carried themselves and kept an even keel. This is a wonderful way for them to open their careers with us and I look forward to building from here."
On getting back to work in 2025:
"It felt fantastic to get the season started and we will continue to push in the gym to reach new heights. I couldn't have asked for more from anyone - from our staff to each athlete! It's always rewarding to see an athlete have their collegiate debut and being at home makes it more special. "You could see the excitement and joy on each of their faces. And that's why I coach and why I think I have the best job in the world! Watching athletes blossom and come into their own - a huge 10 for me.
"Team49 is something special. They really want the best for each other. They support and lift each other up in and out of the gym! That's what we've been building toward the last four years. This team is all about leaving this program better than they found it.
"We will regroup this week and begin fine tuning the little things that will make us better. We appreciate the crowd and all of their energy tonight!"
