Falcons at a Glance:
Junior Milahnie Perry and senior Madison Smith both lead Falcon scoring, averaging 16.6 and 15.0 points, ranking fifth and seventh against the Mountain West, respectively. 31.6 combined points per game for Perry/Smith currently stands as the second-highest scoring duo in the league, just behind New Mexico's Viane Cumber/Destinee Hooks' 33.1.
Sophomore Jayda McNabb, while also averaging 7.8 points per game, leads Air Force in rebounding, averaging 7.8 (4.4 OFF/G, 3.6 DEF/G), the fourth-highest mark in the Mountain West. McNabb's 4.4 offensive rebounds per game currently ranks 11th nationally and leads Mountain West competitors, while only being one of only two players in the country shorter than 6'0" averaging as many offensive boards per game.
Senior point guard Jo Huntimer's 4.1 assists per game and 2.32 assist/turnover ratio both rank second in the Mountain West.
Defensively, the Falcons top the Mountain West in turnovers forced per game (23.69, 13th nationally), turnover margin (+7.69, 17th nationally) and steals per game (13.0, 9th nationally). Madison Smith, sporting 45 steals on the season, leads the Mountain West and ranks 27th nationally in the category. Three of Air Force's starting five (Smith, Huntimer, McNabb) rank top seven in steals against the Mountain West; Only one other program (Utah State) has more than one.
After a 10-2 start in non-conference play, the Falcon offense sports scoring margin of +5.50, good for sixth in the Mountain West.
A Cool Grand:
Combining for 53 points at San Jose State (Jan. 11), Smith and Perry both eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for their respective careers, becoming the 19th and 20th players to do so in Air Force history, and the fourth-such duo to collectively claim the honor in the same season.
Service Before Self:
Jo Huntimer leads Air Force in total assists (65.), while currently sporting the second-best assist average in the Mountain West (4.1). 336 career assists currently ranks second in Air Force DI history and sixth all-time (Briana Autrey-Thompson, 2018-22) - a spot in the record books secured in the Falcons' win over Milwaukee on Nov. 28 in Puerto Rico.
Winning Trends:
In all 10 wins this season, Air Force has:
- Held opponents to less than 70 points (14 consecutive wins);
- Forced more turnovers than opponents (15 consecutive wins);
- Scored more points off of turnovers than opponents;
- Led in the game with five minutes to go (57 consecutive wins in regulation).
Air Force is Undefeated When...
- Out-rebounding opponents (3-0);
- Scoring more second chance points than opponents (8-0).
- Leading home opponents at halftime (5-0);
- Scoring 70 or more in Clune (5-0);
Out-shooting home opponents from the field (3-0) and from three-point range (4-0).
Completing the Mission:
Since Dec. 21, 2021, Air Force has only lost two games after holding a lead with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Both losses took place in overtime, falling that day in double overtime at UTEP, and dropping a 57-51 contest to Army at West Point on Nov. 15 of this season.
Not including overtime games, Air Force has won 57 consecutive contests ending in regulation after holding a lead at the five-minute mark in the fourth quarter.
An Even Dozen:
Air Force has at least 12 steals in 12 of its first 16 games in 2024-25. The Falcons' streak of six-straight contests with 12 or more takeaways to open 2024-25 was the longest active streak in Division I at the time.
A Historic Start:
Air Force opened Mountain West play in 2024-25 at 10-2, marking its first ever 10-win non-conference in Air Force's Division I history and the first such occurrence since the 1991-92 season. Starting 9-1 on the year with just an overtime loss at Army (Nov. 15), Air Force got off to its best ten-game start since Maj. Danny Fowler's 1982-83 Falcons went 12-1. The Falcons opened 6-0 in Clune Arena for the first time since 1985-86, when Air Force started at home with seven-straight wins.
Last Time Out:
Air Force Women's Basketball, intent on correcting its shooting struggles of late, shot 40 percent from the field and finished with its highest scoring output against a Division I opponent this season, but fell, 90-84, to San Jose State on Saturday afternoon at Provident Credit Union Event Center.
Senior Madison Smith and junior Milahnie Perry, one of the most dynamic scoring duos in the Mountain West, both eclipsed the 1,000-point career mark on Saturday, becoming the 19th and 20th Falcons to accomplish the feat in program history, and the fourth duo ever to do so in the same season. Smith, closing the afternoon with 25 points (7-15 FG, 3-6 3FG, 8-9 FT, 5 REB), surpassed the 1,000-point threshold in the closing seconds of a 10-point first quarter, while Perry finished with a game and season high 28 points (10-21 FG, 7-11 FT, 2 REB, 4 STL). Perry ripped off a 13-point second quarter and completed the accomplishment for herself in the fourth.
Sophomore Jayda McNabb closed the afternoon with a 13-point, 11-rebound triple double, earning her fourth of the season (2-4 FG, 1-1 3FG, 6-9 FT, 2 AST, 2 BLK, 6 STL).
Air Force imposed its defensive will on San Jose State early on, earning seven steals and forcing the Spartans into 10 turnovers to lead 20-16 after the first quarter. Smith passed the 1,000-point mark in the closing seconds of the opening frame, driving the Spartan basket and successfully converting an and-one opportunity with three seconds to go. Smith, guarding the inbound pass at the baseline, stole San Jose State's pass to Amira Brown and beat the first-quarter buzzer to gain a 20-14 Air Force lead after one.
In the second, Air Force pushed as much as a 12-point advantage, but San Jose State limited their turnovers and kept the Falcons in check defensively, climbing back to a tie and taking a 40-38 lead off of a Sydni Summers jumper in the closing seconds of the half.
In the third, Smith added another 11 points and a 2-2 performance from three while the Falcons shot 40 percent (6-15) from the field and 60 (3-5) from three-point range. Trailing by as much as seven at the 2:37 mark in the quarter, an 8-2 burst to close the quarter was capped by a successful and-one chance for McNabb with two seconds left in the quarter to trail, 62-61 with 10 minutes to go.
A late 11-2 San Jose State run proved the Falcons' undoing, resulting in the Spartans leading 81-71 with 4:14 left in the game. From there, Air Force climbed its way back behind a 9-2 run, bookended by a critical Huntimer three-pointer to lift Air Force back into a three-point game two minutes to go, but an Amiah Simmons three on the opposite end and Rylei Waugh layup with 55 seconds remaining kept San Jose State in front to close out.
SJSU completed Saturday afternoon shooting 63 (36-57) percent from the field and 50 (9-18) percent from three, both season highs for the Spartans, while also facing a season high 26 turnovers. San Jose State, finishing with 90 points, is the most points scored by the program against a Division I opponent since the 2019-20 season. Saturday marked Air Force's first loss scoring 70 or more points since Dec. 29, 2022, snapping a 28-game win streak in which the Falcons scored 70 or more.
