U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Robert Morris scored four goals in the second period for a 6-3 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey America game, Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
Robert Morris (4-10-2 overall, 4-3-1 AHA) outshot Air Force, 14-4, in the first period, but Falcons only trailed 1-0 after the first period. On a 3-on-2 rush, Colonial defenseman John Babcock scored at 4:44 for the 1-0 lead.
Air Force (9-7-2, 6-5-1 AHA) came out strong in the second period and outshot RMU, 10-0, in the first four minutes. The Falcons tied the game at 3:39 when Chris Hedden scored his second of the series and team-leading ninth of the season from Nolan Cunningham and Will Dawson. Air Force took its first lead of the game five minutes later when freshman Cole Christian redirected a shot by Brendan Gibbons at 8:17. Will Staring also assisted as the Falcons had their first lead of the game.
Robert Morris rallied for four goals in a span of nine minutes late in the second period. Cameron Garvey scored on a breakaway at 10:16 to tie the game at 2-2. Jackson Reineke scored back-to-back goals with a power-play goal at 12:46 and a breakaway goal at 17:26. With 38 seconds left in the second, Ryan Taylor scored on a 2-on-1 for a 5-2 lead.
Midway through the third period, Nick Sajevic scored his third of the season, and earned his team-leading 21st point, from Dawson and Staring at 12:49. Air Force pulled the goalie with 2:30 left, but RMU's Braden Rourke scored in the empty net with 1:21 left.
"I thought at the end of the first period, we were fortunate to only be down a goal," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Give Robert Morris credit, they came back with a sense of urgency like we expected they would. They tried to knock us out in the first period, but Dom Wasik didn't allow that to happen. We got some traction in the second and scored a couple goals, but we were not consistently good and Robert Morris was better."
RMU outshot Air Force, 38-35. Air Force was 0-for-5 on the power play while RMU was 1-for-3. Wasik made 32 saves, the second most of his career, while Charlie Schenkel also had 32 for RMU.
"We can't lose sight of what we have accomplished in the first half of the season," Serratore said. "When the season started, we had no identity and had no idea what we had in goal. This group has established an identity, Dom has given us a chance every night and have had a great run. We are going into the break with a winning record and should be going into the second half of the season with a lot of confidence. When we show up, compete and play connected, good things happen."
Air Force is now idle until the Desert Hockey Classic, Jan. 2-3, hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
