U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Constant effort and fine-tuning in Cadet West Gym for the Air Force Women's Gymnastics team reached its zenith on Friday night, as the Falcons breached the program all-around record on Friday evening, scoring a 195.775 to defeat Mountain West opponent San Jose State and Division III guest Hamline University.
Sophomore Maggie Slife earned her fourth all-around title, besting freshman teammate Alyssa Bigler (39.150) and San Jose State's Devyn Valuch (38.850).
Air Force opened once again in resounding fashion on vault, as the Falcons scored a 49.075, resetting the all-time high score while notching just its second-ever 49-or-better finish.
Freshman Hailey Santana opened the Falcons' evening on vault, landing a season/career best 9.700; Junior Sarah Willis matched her season best, scoring a 9.725; Kylee Greene, competing on vault for just the fourth time since her freshman season, hit a 9.800 to finish third while earning a new career best. Sophomore Olivia Raife bested her season high, finishing with a 9.775.
Slife landed a 9.900 to lead Air Force's record-breaking performance, tying the second-all-time score to match her career best in the event and finish with the podium. Bigler finished second with a 9.875, scoring her third 9.800-or-better in her first month of competition.
On uneven bars, Air Force closed with a 48.750. Both Slife and freshman Anna Kristianson scored a 9.825 to earn a share of first in the event, marking Slife's fourth-straight and Kristianson's second consecutive 9.800 or better this season. Sophomore Chelsea Boyer finished with a 9.750 to reset her career best on the event on her way to a fourth-place mark.
Moving to balance beam, Air Force scored a 49.100 to tie the fourth-best program score, while earning the Falcons' best finish in the rotation since March of 2023. Greene and freshman Anna Bacott both led Air Force in the event, scoring a pair of 9.875s to both reset their respective career bests while each earning a share of first place. Bigler, finishing with a 9.800 for the second straight week, closed in fourth.
As a team, the Falcons finished with top marks in three of four events on Friday night, falling by just five-hundredths on floor to San Jose State. Despite falling just short in the final rotation of the evening, Slife (9.850), Gabriella Meccia (9.800) and Bigler (9.775) closed in first, tied for second, and tied for fourth, respectively.
Head Coach Jennifer Green on relishing the moment with her Falcons:
"A huge shoutout to all the cadets who came to support the team – Your energy made it easy for the team to compete tonight."
"This team believes in themselves, and boy is it fun to watch. It all starts with a staff that works together and lifts each other up - and the athletes are doing the same thing. This group is genuinely thrilled for each other and they put what's best for the team before themselves."
Coach Green on Air Force wins over Mountain West Opponents:
"We've had the potential to challenge the other teams in our conference, it nice to see our hard work is moving us in the right direction. I couldn't be happier for this team to experience what winning feels like, and we're far from done."
On the Falcons' record-breaking night:
'It doesn't stink to break some scoring records! We waited a long time between finishing vault and starting the next rotation tonight. We were on such a high from a great vault rotation. The wait could have affected our momentum, but the team poured their energy into supporting Hamlin's athletes while they finished. I am truly proud of how they handled themselves throughout the entire night."
"We put together four events tonight. We will continue to focus on the little details to see how far this team can rise."
"We have a quick turn around with a meet on Sunday. We will enjoy the win tonight and then it's right back to work tomorrow."
