Air Force Falls at Ohio State, 17-11

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A late rally came up short as Air Force dropped a 17-11 non-conference game against Ohio State, Saturday afternoon, at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Falcons remain in the hunt for their first win of the season while tOSU improved to 4-1 overall.
SIGNIFICANT STATS:
-Junior attack man Caelan Driggs tied his career best mark with five goals. He notched his trick in the first half. Driggs leads AF with eight goals this season.
-Wes Peene notched his first hat trick this season, scoring three goals in the final 17:33 of regulation. Peene has five goals on the campaign.
-Team captain Josh Yago dished three assists and scored a goal marking his third straight game with multiple assists and at least one goal. Yago leads the team with 11 points.
-Air Force put up 11 goals and 19 points for the most single-game goals/points scored this season. The11 goals is the most put up against Ohio State since 2014.
-Of the 33 AF shots, 21 were taken on goal marking a team season high
-The Falcons' .333 shot percentage marked a team season best
-Senior faceoff man Daniel Haimes won the day at the faceoff dot, winning 11-17 attempts and helping the Falcons to 17-32 total faceoff wins. His 11 faceoff wins ties his season best.
-In his collegiate faceoff debut, C4C Michael Frieri came out on top as he won 5-9 attempts.
-Ohio State attack man Alex Marinier finished the game with seven goals on eight shots.
POSTGAME NOTES:
-The Falcons have started 0-3 four times since 2015; despite the cold starts each of those seasons concluded as winning campaigns.
-The Buckeyes lead the all-time series, 21-5. Air Force and Ohio State have played three times in the last five years with tOSU claiming all three wins.
-Ohio State is now 2-1 against ASUN teams, falling to Utah (19-13) while besting Bellarmine (14-4) and Air Force.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter:
Ohio State outscored Air Force, 4-2, in the opening 15 minutes with Caelan Driggs scoring both goals for AF with feeds from Cole Rassas and Josh Yago. The Buckeyes' Alex Mariner notched his hat trick in the first quarter.
Second Quarter:
The Buckeyes scored the first and last goals of the quarter, outpacing the Falcons 4-1 in the second. Driggs notched his hat trick at 3:31 via Yago's helper.
Third Quarter:
The third quarter was AF's most dire moment as the Buckeyes outscored the Falcons, 6-1. Ohio State's Ed Shean put up his fourth goal of the game for the second Buckeye to claim a hat trick. Wes Peene killed the score streak with an unassisted goal at 2:33 to close the quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
As the Buckeye subs took the field, Air Force began to rally. Peene notched the first goal out of the break via feed from Jake Mason. Mana Wilhelm helped Josh Yago with his first goal of the game at the 11:59 mark. Yago then assisted Ryan Stadlemaier with his goal (7:37) followed by Calean Driggs' fourth goal at 5:29. Yago put up his second goal of the game 47 seconds later (4:42). The Buckeyes and Falcons went blow-for-blow to the final horn with Driggs notching his fifth goal and Peene claiming his hat trick with the final goal at 1:51.
UP NEXT:
The Falcons take the fight to New England as they face off against Boston University on Saturday, February 22. Action at Nickerson Field is slated for noon ET. The game marks the third meeting between the teams and first time playing since 2018. Boston U has not lost to Air Force.
